Girls soccer: Davis tops Farmington in PK shootout on Packer kick

By Matt Harris - Special to the Standard-Examiner | Sep 9, 2021

KAYSVILLE — Davis High girls soccer’s unblemished record in Region 1 remained so on Thursday evening, despite Farmington’s best shot.

Just like the last time they played each other, the Darts prevailed in a shootout, 3-2, to beat the Phoenix after double overtime ended in a 0-0 draw.

It was an ugly defensive game under a hot, 97-degree sun that saw more injuries than scoring, as three different players left the field less healthy than they entered it.

Davis (9-1, 7-0 Region 1) preserved its status as the top-ranked team in 6A with the win but, according to Darts head coach Souli Phongsavath, they looked anything but. He called it “one of the worst games Davis has played in a long time.”

“We’re really fortunate to get out with a win,” Phongsavath said. “In overtime, especially, they outplayed us … for us, it’s nothing to be proud of, besides the fact that we won.”

Conversely, Farmington (4-6, 3-4) head coach Sara Beecher was elated at her squad’s competitiveness against the top dogs.

“I’m very proud of how my team played,” Beecher said. “I think they controlled the ball in the middle and in the air, but we’ve got to learn how to put our chances away.”

Farmington started with possession in the first overtime and got the first three shots on goal within a few minutes but to no avail, thanks to a stellar effort all game in goal by Taygan Sill.

Midway through the second overtime, Davis got awarded a penalty kick, giving the Darts a golden chance to end it, but junior Kennady Rees shot way over the net to preserve Farmington’s hopes and head into a shootout for the second time this season between the two teams.

After both teams traded goals down to a 2-2 tie, a miss by Farmington’s Liv Hoover gave Davis a chance, and Darts freshman Simone Packer capitalized with a score on the right side to give Davis the victory.

Within the first minute of the game, stoppage occurred when Farmington junior Swayzee Arnell, Farmington’s second-leading scorer, injured her foot, putting the Phoenix down a starter. She did not return.

The aggression of the Phoenix looked more than a match for the Darts defense, as Farmington got three solid shots on goal in the first half. Shortly before the end of the half, junior Whitney Avei gave Farmington its best scoring chance of the half with a place kick at short distance, but Darts goalie Sill blocked it on the top right side of the goal, sending both teams scoreless into halftime.

After halftime, it continued to be a back-and-forth affair with a zero-all score.

Darts senior Eliza Carmack went down hard with an injury shortly before a mandated water break in the second half and was carried off the field, not to return.

Involved in an ugly collision, Phoenix sophomore Paige Erickson fell on her head and injured her neck. She also did not return.
