Late penalty lifts Ogden boys soccer past 10-player Morgan in 1st-place showdown

By Patrick Carr - Prep Sports Reporter | Mar 30, 2023

Thursday saw the Ogden and Morgan boys soccer teams face each other for the first of two times this high school season. They’re the prospective favorites in Region 13 and entered Thursday’s game with 3-0 region records.

Their second meeting, scheduled for April 25, can’t come soon enough.

Ogden took over first place in Region 13 with a 2-1 win over 10-player Morgan with Ty Robinson’s 70th-minute penalty kick serving as the go-ahead goal after the Tigers briefly trailed 1-0.

“It was fun. I think we started off well and got a little lazy because we had control of the game pretty much, and they put one in against us and we realized we had to pick it up,” Robinson said. “I think being down 1-0 gives you a little bit of a sense of urgency and just allows us to want to give a little extra to put goals in.”

Morgan’s (6-3, 3-1 Region 13) Tyson Adams headed in Beau Johnson’s corner kick from close range to put the Trojans up 1-0 early in the second half.

In the 56th minute, Ogden’s (7-1, 4-0) Jace Rodriguez jumped up to meet Ben Points’ bouncing cross in the box and, due to the height of the bounce, scored with his chest for a 1-1 tie.

With 10 minutes left in the game, Robinson went down in the penalty box and the referee ruled he was fouled, and Robinson scored the penalty kick.

Last year, Robinson played on the academy team for the Park City Red Wolves, a semi-pro team in USL League Two (the fourth division of American pro soccer, essentially). But he returned to Ogden this year where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons.

“My senior year, I want to play with my friends and I’m also going on a mission (after high school), so a lot of them I probably won’t see again after those two years,” he said. “So I just feel like I want to spend as much time with them as I could.”

A big moment came in the 60th minute, leading up to the penalty kick goal.

Ogden goalkeeper Hunter Paskins grabbed a stray pass near the top of the penalty box and Morgan’s Beau Johnson, who was chasing the ball, ran into Paskins.

Johnson got a yellow card and left the field. Then, the referee changed the yellow to red and reduced Morgan to 10 players.

Morgan coach Seth Wallace questioned the red and subsequently was shown a straight red card himself. Both he and Johnson are suspended for the next game. Wallace didn’t comment on the red cards and said the team will try again the next time it plays Ogden.

Ten minutes later, Robinson was fouled inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty kick, a decision met with visible frustration and protest from Morgan players.

After Robinson buried the penalty and celebrated with his teammates in front of the Morgan fans, the Trojans nearly tied the game.

Ogden gave the ball away in its own half and Morgan’s Cooper Castro belted a shot that was bound for the upper part of the goal, and Paskins made a good save to deny the chance.

The teams will have to navigate a region schedule that’s trickier than other teams’ records indicate before facing each other again on April 25. That game will likely have some form of the Region 13 title on the line, along with playoff seeding implications.
