KAYSVILLE — On Monday morning, the Region 1 boys soccer standings were such that three different teams — Davis High, Farmington and Fremont — could have shared the region championship by day’s end.

About 50 seconds after kickoff, Andrew Donigan put Davis on the path to a solo title. The Darts technically clinched a share of the region championship with Friday’s 3-1 win over Weber but made the title their own by beating Syracuse 3-1 on Monday evening.

Had the Darts lost, they would have shared the title with at least Farmington (9-3 Region 1) and, had it won late Monday night at Weber, Fremont (8-3 Region 1).

Instead, Donigan scored two goals to send Davis (11-2, 10-2 Region 1), which won its first region title since 2019, into the playoffs on a seven-game winning streak.

“It feels good. All by ourselves? Don’t have to share it? It feels nice, it’s fun,” Donigan said.

Davis’ Spencer Harwood scored to make it a 2-0 halftime lead. In the 66th minute, Syracuse’s (8-7, 6-6) Tyler Reynolds headed in a cross to cut the Darts’ lead to 2-1.

Donigan got free on a breakaway five minutes later, Syracuse’s Ty Richardson saved the shot, but Donigan got to the rebound with the outside of his right foot and sent it home despite a Titans defender putting a head on the ball.

“I thought I was going to make the first one, but second one works,” Donigan said.

The Darts’ region title bucks a longtime trend. Nineteen of the last 21 times, the team that has won Region 1 is the team with the best overall goals-per-game defense.

Statistically, Davis had the second best defense (15 goals allowed in 13 games) behind Farmington (11 in 13 games), but the Darts still mark defense as their strength.

“I’m biased, obviously, but I think the toughest region, top to bottom, in the state (is Region 1) and to only have two losses is amazing. We had freshmen step up, come in in key positions, (goalkeeper) Jude (Walker) has been solid all year, Andrew Donigan over there up top, holding the ball, glad he was able to get a couple goals here because our offense kind of flows through him,” DHS coach Souli Phongsavath said.

Both teams now await the release of the 6A state tournament bracket, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
