Prep baseball playoffs: Morgan eliminated; Game 1 losses add up

OREM — No. 4 Morgan High baseball saw its season end with a 3A playoff elimination-game loss to No. 12 Emery (12-18) by a 7-5 score on Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University.
Emery piled up a five-run fourth to doom the Trojans. Five different Trojans each tallied one hit and scored one run.
Cooper Stuart doubled home Owen Gilson in the second and Easton Venz singled in Luke Bauerle in the third to help Morgan (20-10) to a 3-1 lead. In the fourth, Camron Talbot scored on a wild pitch and Kanyon Leonelli plated on an Emery error to cut Morgan’s deficit to 6-5, but the Trojans didn’t get a runner in scoring position for the final three innings.
Venz held Emery to one unearned run on two hits over the final 3 1/3 innings, striking out three.
HERRIMAN 6, FREMONT 1
PLAIN CITY — No. 11 Herriman (13-13) used small-ball scoring and a five-hitter to upend No. 6 Fremont in Game 1 of a 6A second-round playoff series.
After Herriman took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single and a run-scoring error, Fremont (19-7) tallied its one run in the third inning when T Grieve scored from third on a passed ball. The Mustangs added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth, an RBI triple in the fifth, and one run each on a wild pitch and a passed ball in the seventh to pull away.
Jace Hadley hit 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot for Fremont. Brant Koford hit a double.
The teams play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Thursday; Game 3 follows, if necessary.
BRIGHTON 10, NORTHRIDGE 0
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Josh Mawhinney pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two, to lead No. 2 Brighton (23-3) in a six-inning shutout of No. 15 Northridge to open the teams’ 5A second-round series.
Boston Wright and Jon Olsen tallied the hits for Northridge (17-11). Kam Shirreffs gave up two earned runs of Brighton’s 10, allowing seven hits and striking out four in 5 2/3 innings. Brighton plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth, triggering the run rule with a two-run double.
The teams play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Thursday; Game 3 follows, if necessary.
MTN RIDGE 5, LAYTON 0
HERRIMAN — No. 4 Mountain Ridge (17-9) blanked No. 13 Layton at home to open the teams’ 6A second-round series.
Will Hoffman, Tanner Neil, Paul York, Carter Schoenfeld and Kobe Manning each hit one single for Layton (10-15).
Herriman’s Grayson Riding allowed three hits and struck out seven while walking zero in five innings.
The teams play Game 2 at 1 p.m. Thursday; Game 3 follows, if necessary.
SYRACUSE at DAVIS POSTPONED
KAYSVILLE — Game 1 of the first-round series between No. 3 Davis and No. 14 Syracuse was postponed due to rain. The series will now open at Syracuse with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday. Game 3, if necessary, would be played Friday.
