Friday’s 4A boys basketball state semifinal in Southern Utah has a very far-Northern Utah feel to it.

Bonneville High will meet Bear River High at 5:50 p.m. Friday at Southern Utah University in Cedar City after both teams scored double-digit upset wins over No. 1 seeds in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The winner of the Bonneville-Bear River matchup will face the Sky View-Payson winner at 7 p.m. Saturday at SUU.

Zach Alspaugh and Hank Bushell led Bonneville to a 14-point upset win over top-seeded Pine View. Alspaugh led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Bushell had 14 of his 19 points in the first half.

The score was 9-9 after a patient and defensive-minded first quarter. Bushell scored 12 points in the second quarter as the Lakers went ahead 29-21 at halftime after PV took a small lead early in the second.

Pine View briefly took the lead in the third quarter and the Lakers clamped down again to go up 41-38 heading into the fourth.

The final frame was cagey at first, but the Lakers put the game away with a final surge that ended the Region 9-champion Panthers' hopes of staging a late comeback.

Alspaugh and Kinnon Finder hit 3-pointers as part of a prolonged 10-0 run that took the lead from 50-44 up to 60-44.

Bushell also had seven rebounds with two blocks. Kinnon Finder had nine points with six rebounds. Jordan Citte had four assists and the Lakers shot 7 of 10 from the foul line.

Bear River drove to the basket in droves and shot 27 of 30 from the free-throw line in an 80-56 upset win over top-seeded Orem, marked by the Bears outscoring the Tigers 34-15 in a fourth quarter that was laden with technical fouls and free throws.

Parker Coombs hit a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer for a 29-27 Bears lead after Orem had erased an earlier 23-16 Bear River advantage.

BR ripped off a 10-1 run to close the third quarter with a 46-41 lead. The lead went to 59-49 after a Mark Huber drive to the basket in the fourth.

Huber finished with a team-high 21 points and shot 15 of 16 from the free throw line.

Coombs had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Ren Fonnesbeck had 18 points with a 5-of-7 mark from 3-point range. Wyatt Roholt scored 18 with five rebounds.

Bear River shot 7 of 14 from 3-point range and 16 of 29 inside the arc.

With the Bears up 70-54 late in the game, Bear River’s Wyatt Roholt and two Orem players — Ethan Slade and Taft Mitchell — were whistled for technical fouls while Orem’s Puka Nacua, who had already fouled out and received a technical, had to be escorted out of the arena after a confrontation with two BR players.

That resulted in six straight free throws for Huber, who made all six.

Bonneville's girls basketball team led 27-19 at halftime but a Uintah team that played 16 of 22 regular-season games on the road this year stormed back to hand the Lakers a 43-42 loss in the 4A quarterfinals at SUU. No stats were reported.
