Clearfield High School takes on Northridge during a prep baseball game on Wednesday April 11, 2018, in Layton.

PREP BASEBALL

1. Clearfield

Last week: 4

Notes: The Falcons (5-3, 3-0 Region 1) swept Fremont in the first series of region play. Conner Coleman hasn’t pitched yet this season, but he’s hitting .444 with nine RBIs and two homers.

2. Bountiful

Last week: 1

Notes: The Braves (4-3) went 1-3 in a St. George tournament in which they threw most of their pitching staff. Josh Welling had a 4-for-5, five-RBI game against Mountain View.

3. Syracuse

Last week: NR

Notes: Syracuse (5-3, 2-0 Region 1) beat Northridge twice last week in region play with the third game coming on Monday. Through the first eight games, the Titans had an on-base percentage of .424.

4. Bear River

Last week: 5

Notes: The Bears (5-2) split a pair of games last week and open region play with Mountain Crest on Tuesday. Sophomore Easton Lish is hitting .524 in the first seven games.

5. Roy

Last week: 3

Notes: Roy only played once last week, a high-scoring loss to Lone Peak. The Royals (3-2) play twice this week.

Dropped out: Fremont (3-5, 0-3)

PREP BOYS SOCCER

The top two spots are unchanged, while

1. Layton

Last week: 1

Notes: Layton’s strong start is built on defense, where the Lancers (4-0-1, 1-0 Region 1) have allowed just four goals in their opening five games.

2. Layton Christian

Last week: 2

Notes: This might be the scenario where everyone else in Region 16 is overmatched. LCA (8-0, 2-0 Region 16) looks unstoppable right now.

3. Viewmont

Last week: 5

Notes: All the Vikings (3-0-2) did last week was win both games 3-0. They head into region play this week on a full head of steam.

4. Roy

Last week: 4

Notes: Roy held off a good Ben Lomond team for a win. Now the Royals (4-2) get to see what happens when the games matter a little bit more when region starts this week.

5. Weber

Last week: NR

Notes: The Warriors (3-1, 1-0 Region 1) have kept three clean sheets in a row. In a region where defense is the calling card, that will be crucial down the stretch.

Dropped out: Bear River (4-2, 0-2 Region 12)

PREP SOFTBALL

Only one of the top five softball teams is in the same slot as last week and three of the top five are brand new to the rankings this week.

1. Layton

Last week: 1

Notes: The Lancers (8-2, 2-0 Region 1) thumped both Weber and Clearfield, with the latter result being a pretty big statement about the balance of power in the region. Four players already have 10-plus RBIs.

2. Bountiful

Last week: 3

Notes: Bountiful’s already showing who’s boss in Region 5, even as the Braves (5-2, 3-0 Region 5) make tweaks to their lineup on a game-by-game basis. March isn’t even over yet and they’re already done with a quarter of the region schedule.

3. Davis

Last week: NR

Notes: The Darts (6-2, 2-0 Region 1) have quietly gotten off to a nice start. They have a big matchup with Clearfield this week.

4. Fremont

Last week: NR

Notes: Fremont (5-3, 1-0 Region 1) won a pitcher’s duel region game 2-1, then backed it up with two more one-run wins last week (4-3, 8-7). It’s early in the season, but those one-run wins may pay off down the road.

5. Bonneville

Last week: NR

Notes: Here’s all the Lakers (5-3, 3-0 Region 11) have done in three region games: outscore opponents 64-12, including quite the statement 23-11 win at Stansbury.

Dropped out: Morgan (7-3), Clearfield (3-3, 0-2 Region 1), Roy (4-5, 1-2 Region 5)
