This week appears to be shaping up similar to last week: rain early, sunshine later. The schedule backlog isn’t as big of an issue for the 6A and 5A schools, but for 4A, 3A and 2A, it’s a bigger deal because those classifications begin their state playoffs earlier.

The other effect of a schedule backlog is that more schools are going to play on less days, meaning the already dwindling pool of referees from which to draw from will just be smaller. So don’t be surprised if a makeup softball game has only one umpire or a makeup soccer game has just two referees.

SOFTBALL

1. Layton

Last week: 1

Notes: Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you win. In Layton’s (9-2, 4-0 Region 1) case, it was a walk-off, two-base error in a 4-3 win over Syracuse. If the weather clears up, the Lancers have a big showdown with Davis on Thursday.

2. Bountiful

Last week: 2

Notes: Bountiful (8-3, 6-0 Region 5) still tops the region by a healthy margin, but the Braves had to hold off Roy 9-7 to keep it that way.

3. Fremont

Last week: 4

Notes: By way of a 4-0 shutout over Davis, Fremont (10-4, 4-0 Region 1) leapfrogs the Darts into the No. 3 spot. In 12 reported games, Rylie Bennett is batting .579 and Aubree Morrow has 20 RBIs.

4. Davis

Last week: 3

Notes: After a loss to Fremont, Davis (8-3, 3-1 Region 1) goes back to the drawing board. The Darts can make things interesting in the region title race by beating first-place Layton on Thursday.

5. Bear River

Last week: 5

Notes: The Bears (6-7, 3-0 Region 12) are 3/3 in region games so far. It’s unwise to bet against them in region play.

SOCCER

1. Layton

Last week: 1

Notes: The Lancers (8-0-1, 5-0 Region 1) showed Region 1 who’s boss, beating a really good Weber team 3-0 with all three goals in the first 26 minutes of the first half.

2. Layton Christian

Last week: 2

Notes: With three region games left, the Region 16 title is Layton Christian’s (11-0-1, 6-0-1 Region 16) to lose. They’ve outscored their region foes 52-2 in those games, including last Monday’s 15-0 drubbing over North Summit.

3. Viewmont

Last week: 3

Notes: Viewmont’s another Davis County soccer team that hasn’t lost yet this year (5-0-2, 2-0 Region 5). Where the Vikings aren’t pummeling each team they face, they’ve allowed just two goals in their seven games to date.

4. Davis

Last week: 5

Notes: Davis (4-1-3, 4-1 Region 1) moves up a spot after a 2-0 win over Clearfield combined with Weber’s loss to Layton. The Darts now get their crack at the Lancers Tuesday.

5. Weber

Last week: 4

Notes: Thursday’s shutout loss at Layton was the first real wakeup call for Weber (6-2, 4-1 Region 1) this season. The Warriors will need to work especially hard to keep their nerve with their next three games on the road.

BASEBALL

1. Davis

Last week: 2

Notes: The Darts (10-5, 7-1 Region 1) certainly look the part of a repeat region championship contender after taking care of Syracuse and Weber in three games last week. A big series against Clearfield awaits this week, weather permitting.

2. Bountiful

Last week: 1

Notes: Bountiful (5-3, 0-0 Region 5) dropping to No. 2 isn’t any kind of indictment on the Braves, who haven’t played a game in two weeks and likely won’t until Thursday.

3. Roy

Last week: 3

Notes: The Royals’ (7-3, 0-0 Region 5) series with Bountiful has been postponed more times than we can count.

4. Clearfield

Last week: 4

Notes: The Falcons (7-6, 5-2 Region 1) are on tap for four games this week, weather permitting. The good news for the team is head coach Steve Ross is back with the team and their home field has been deemed safe for play.

5. Fremont

Last week: Not ranked

Notes: If there’s a team flying under the radar, it’s Fremont (9-6, 5-3 Region 1). Since getting swept by Clearfield, the Silver Wolves went ahead and swept Northridge and then held off Layton twice last week. All five of their region wins are by three runs or less.

Dropped out: Syracuse (6-6, 3-3 Region 1).
