Bonneville vs. Layton 14

Layton defeated Bonneville 54-42 in a girls varsity basketball game Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at Bonneville High School in Washington Terrace.

There's a bit of a shakeup in the boys' top five this week as Woods Cross, on the back of two losses, exits the rankings. The regular season ends next Tuesday for boys basketball.

1. Bountiful

Last week: 1

Notes: Bountiful (13-8, 6-1 Region 5) isn’t dropping from the top spot even after splitting its two region games last week. The Braves can thank Weber for that after the Warriors beat Fremont. Bountiful’s still in control of Region 5, sporting a two-game lead with three to play.

2. Fremont

Last week: 2

Notes: Weber came back from 12 points down to hand Fremont (14-5, 8-1 Region 1) its first loss in nearly two months. After a 20.8-point average margin of victory the first five region games, the last four games have been decided by 4.5 points.

3. Davis

Last week: 4

Notes: Davis (14-7, 8-2 Region 1) did its part last week with two double-digit wins. In his past seven games, senior guard Tyson Garff is averaging 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and shooting 51.5 percent from the floor.

4. Layton Christian

Last week: 5

Notes: The Eagles (18-6, 10-0 Region 16) won their region for the eighth year in a row. Now they turn their attention to the state playoffs and a Saturday first-round meeting with Rockwell at Snow College. LCA will try for a second state title in three seasons and a third in eight seasons.

5. Farmington

Last week: NR

Notes: Most teams would start to show cracks if a 10-point road halftime lead turned to six at the start of the fourth quarter. Farmington (11-9, 4-3 Region 5) did no such thing at top-ranked Bountiful, outscoring the Braves in the fourth to hand them their first region loss.

Dropped out: Woods Cross (12-6, 3-4)

Two teams come into the top five this week: Bonneville, which had a multi-week absence, and first-year school Farmington. The regular season for 6A and 5A ends this week as the state tournament (already) starts next week, while 4A ends next week.

1. Fremont

Last week: 1

Notes: The Silver Wolves (18-1, 11-0 Region 1) had just one game last week, a 37-point win at Weber. Sophomore post Emma Calvert has scored in double figures in all but one game this year. Fremont’s at home Tuesday to No. 3 Syracuse.

2. Box Elder

Last week: 2

Notes: After such a decently long drought, Box Elder (16-5, 9-0) clinched its second region title in three years on Friday and got to cut down the nets at home. The Bees visit Viewmont on Tuesday.

3. Syracuse

Last week: 4

Notes: This time last week, Syracuse (14-6, 7-4 Region 1) was looking primed to battle for the No. 4 seed. After beating fellow playoff contender Davis and Weber, the Titans have won five straight and are going to the playoffs no matter what happens at No. 1 Fremont on Tuesday.

4. Bonneville

Last week: NR

Notes: Ever since the Juan Diego loss, the Lakers (15-5, 9-1 Region 11) have stormed back with four straight wins by double digits to put themselves one win away from winning a second region championship in a row. Bonneville goes to Ogden on Friday.

5. Farmington

Last week: NR

Notes: Other than a Friday loss at Bountiful, Farmington (12-8, 6-3 Region 5) has been a pretty consistent team in its first year of existence. All six of the Phoenix’s region wins are by double digits, and so are all three of its losses. Farmington’s locked into the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

Dropped out: Weber (13-7, 6-5), Davis (13-7, 7-4)
