CLEARFIELD — Fremont High softball scored eight runs in the first inning, then held off a Clearfield comeback to advance 9-8 in the 6A state tournament one-loss bracket Friday at Clearfield High School.

The game began Tuesday but was suspended due to rain with Fremont leading 8-4 in the top of the fourth inning. The contest was rescheduled but rained out at Taylorsville’s Valley Softball Complex every day for the last three days until the teams agreed Friday to play at Clearfield.

Tyra Coats hit a three-run home run for Fremont (17-8). Rylie Bennett, Kynlee Hoggan and Lacey Kearsley each had two hits. Bennett hit a homer and drove in three, Hoggan doubled twice and Kearsley once. Hoggan pitched a complete game, striking out six in the win.

Macy Benincosa went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer for Clearfield. Kaycee Valencia batted 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Brynnley Christiansen and Miranda Mansfield each hit a double. The Falcons end the season at 15-10 overall, and 6-6 in Region 1.

Fremont advances to play the winner of Kearns and Riverton in a game scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Davis High School.


TAYLORSVILLE — Skyridge (21-5) broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth inning to take control and eliminate Box Elder in the 5A state tournament Friday morning.

Jostlen Leggett batted 4 for 4 with a solo home run and two RBIs for the Bees. Sydnie Blacker and Sophie Blacker each had two hits, with Sydnie driving in one.

Box Elder concludes the season with a 11-15 record overall (8-7 in Region 5).


The remainder of the 6A winner’s bracket quarterfinals and associated one-loss bracket games have been rescheduled for Saturday at Clearfield, Davis and Layton high schools.

The semifinal and championship rounds have been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 28, at Taylorsville’s Valley Softball Complex.

Saturday’s schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

11 a.m. — Davis vs. Pleasant Grove, one-loss game at Layton HS. Davis would play again at 1:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. with wins.

1:15 p.m. — Fremont vs. Kearns/Riverton, one-loss game at Davis HS. Fremont would play again at 5:45 p.m. with a win.

3:30 p.m. — Layton vs. Copper Hills, winner’s bracket quarterfinal at Davis HS. Layton plays again Tuesday with a win. With a loss, Layton would face the winner of Fremont/Kearns/Riverton at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.


Other than a pair of one-loss games, all other 5A games were rained out Friday. The conclusion of the 5A tournament has been rescheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 28-29, at Taylorsville’s Valley Softball Complex.

In winner’s bracket quarterfinals, Farmington vs. Bountiful is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and Roy vs. West is scheduled for 4 p.m.
