Last Friday and Saturday, several area wrestlers finished their regular seasons by clinching top seeds for the upcoming state wrestling tournaments.
Here are the local winners from the 6A, 5A and 3A divisional meets.
The 4A divisional meets are this Friday and Saturday at Tooele High (Division A) and Mountain View High (Division B).
Layton High won the 6A Division A meet with 446.5 points, far ahead of second-place Westlake (384.5). Weber (166.5) and Northridge (163) were fifth and sixth in the team standings, respectively. Clearfield (63) was 11th.
Area champions were Quade Smith (Layton, 106 pounds), Aidan Harris (Layton, 113), Tayton Bennett (Layton, 126), Tyson Humphreys (Layton, 132), Terrell Barraclough (Layton, 138), Canyon Brann (Layton, 152), Alec Bolingbroke (Layton, 170), Cole Faust (Layton, 182) and Jon Hunt (Layton, 285).
In the 6A Division B meet, Syracuse finished in second place with 403 points. Pleasant Grove won the meet with 559.5 points. Fremont (312.5) and Davis (242) were third and fourth, respectively.
Fremont’s Mason Denton (126 pounds), Davis’ Parker Coffey (132), Syracuse’s Samuel Sprehn (170), Davis’ Heston Percival (182) and Syracuse’s Kaden Montano (285) were the area champions.
The winners will be top seeds in the state tournament, which begins next Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Utah Valley University.
In the Division A tournament, Box Elder edged Wasatch 389.5-385.5 to claim the team title. Farmington (252) and Woods Cross (180.5) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Box Elder’s Bridger Ricks (106 pounds), Trevor Murray (160), Lucas Cochran (182), Kellen Collier (220) and Ryan Gunn (285) all won their respective bracket championships. Gunn takes a 40-1 record to the state tournament while Cochran is 48-2.
In the Division B tournament, Viewmont had a commanding 382-284.5 margin to beat Maple Mountain. Roy (93.5) was 10th and Bountiful (24) was 12th.
Roy’s Donald Butler (132 pounds) beat Corner Canyon’s Mattias Osthed in the finals to win the 132-pound divisional championship.
Viewmont’s Karson Rees (126 pounds), Lorrince Essig (145), Jeremy Evans (152, 39-1) and Tyson Zesiger (195) all won their respective brackets. Evans will carry a 39-1 record into the state tournament in a week-and-a-half.
The state tournament begins next Wednesday, Feb. 13, at UVU.
In the 3A Division B meet, Morgan High finished in fourth place with 183 points.
The Trojans’ Jarrett Jorgensen won the 120-pound weight class title. Jorgensen will be a top seed in the 120-pound bracket when the 3A state tournament begins next Friday, Feb. 15, at UVU.
