Fremont vs. Davis BBB 05

Fremont players celebrate following a play in the second half of a boys varsity basketball game against Davis on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, at Fremont High School in Plain City.

PLAIN CITY — Fremont junior guard Tige Voorhees may have made some bigger shots in his life, but he can’t remember when.

Fremont had frittered away most of a 14-point fourth quarter lead when Davis closed the gap to three points with 3:17 remaining, but Voorhees snapped the strings from beyond the arc for a key 3-pointer.

Moments later, the Darts were within four points but Voorhees tickled the twine from the baseline with 1:30 left and the Silver Wolves held on from there.

The net result was Fremont swept the season series over the Darts, capturing an electric 55-53 Region 1 victory Friday evening.

“That was a great job by my teammates finding me the ball; they sucked in on (Dallin Hall) and they passed it out to me and I was lucky enough to hit the shots,” Voorhees said. “My teammates and coaches have a ton of confidence in me and I just let it fly, and they went in.”

Voorhees finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Hall led the Silver Wolves with monster game of 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Baylor Harrop also notched double digits for Fremont, scoring 12 points to go along with six boards. Seven of his points came in the first half when Fremont built a 26-19 lead on the strength of a 9-0 run early in the second stanza.

Fremont (14-4, 8-0 Region 1) held the Darts to nine, 10 and nine points through three quarters and built a 41-28 lead at the third stop.

“Our defense gave us a chance to have that lead,” Fremont coach Corey Melaney said. “Even when we didn’t play particularly well on offense, we were still able to get some separation. We weren’t great, but our defense was phenomenal.”

Davis (12-7, 6-2) rallied back in the fourth frame with an early 8-3 run, all of the points scored by Spencer Vernon off the bench.

The lead went back to 46-36, but Davis ran off another streak of 13-5 to make it 51-49 with 2:17 remaining.

“Spencer has been out with a broken wrist and his first game back was about a week and a half ago,” Davis coach Chad Sims said. “He’s just getting back in playing shape and the rotation and did a heck of a job.”

Hall then found Calvin Peterson underneath for a layup and Voorhees then hit his second big bucket in the quarter to give Fremont some breathing room.

Tyson Garff scored a game-high 23 points for the Darts, including 12 in the fourth quarter comeback, and added six rebounds and four assists. Brendon Redford checked in with 14 points and eight rebounds for Davis.

Fremont now has a two-game lead in Region 1 with four to play.

Melaney was not yet ready to claim the region title but said “we feel really good where we are right now.”
