Raptors win final game of Sunday doubleheader with big 6th inning

By Brett Hein - | Aug 22, 2021

After losing three straight to open a stretch of four seven-inning games across two doubleheaders over the weekend, the Ogden Raptors used solid pitching and a big sixth inning to take the final game Sunday.

Ogden goes for a split of the six-game series in the finale at 6:40 p.m. Monday, then returns home Wednesday for another six-game series against Missoula.

RAPTORS 8, ROCKIES 2

Josh Broughton and David Maberry each totaled three hits, Dom Abbadessa scored three runs and Ogden scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull away in Sunday’s second game.

Colt Mink turned in a two-inning start, allowing no hits and an unearned run. Jackson Sigman got the win, throwing his own pair of two scoreless innings.

RBI singles from Broughton and Maberry helped Ogden to a 3-1 lead through three innings. Troy Dixon singled in Pavin Parks in the fifth to make it 4-1.

In the big sixth, Parks singled in Broughton and Jakob Goldfarb, and Owen Taylor singled in Abbadessa and Parks.

ROCKIES 5, RAPTORS 3

In a seven-inning game, it should loom large that Josh Broughton — the Raptors’ strong-armed, .404-hitting outfielder — took the mound for the first time in more than a month and pitched four one-hit shutout innings, and needed just 51 pitches to do it.

But he took the mound in the bottom of the third when the final score of Sunday’s first game was ultimately already decided.

Nate Scantlin hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run second inning against Ogden starter Tate Budnick and that was enough for GJ despite the Raptors tallying one run in each of the first three innings.

For Ogden, Pavin Parks hit a solo homer in the first, Chris Caffrey singled in Jakob Goldfarb in the second, and Nick Michaels singled in Broughton in the third, who began the game as the designated hitter before taking the mound in the bottom of that frame.

Cade Crader threw a complete game in the seven-inning affair, giving up three runs on seven hits, for the win.
