Raptors drop another close one Wednesday at Northern Colorado

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Jul 24, 2024

The Ogden Raptors lost another close one to the Northern Colorado Owlz, falling 5-4 on Wednesday night in Windsor, Colorado.

The Owlz (34-21, 6-2 second half) built a 5-1 lead against Ogden starter Rafael Vazquez when Jackson Coutts, the walk-off hero from Tuesday night, singled in a run in the third and doubled in another in the fifth.

Vazquez gave up four earned runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking zero, in five innings.

The Raptors (25-31, 3-5) tallied nine hits in six-plus innings against Northern Colorado starter Chase Gearing but only one produced runs. Raymond Gil drove in all four runs for Ogden in the game — a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a three-run homer with no outs in the seventh.

That ended Gearing’s night and the Raptors didn’t get a hit the rest of the night. Owlz pitchers walked one batter for the game. Ogden grounded into three double plays and had a runner picked off at second following a one-out double.

Cole Jordan, Pearce Howard and Elliott Good each totaled two hits for Ogden.

Northern Colorado third baseman Evan Scavutto hit 3 for 5 and scored two runs.

Gabriel Pacheco threw three scoreless innings to relieve Vazquez as the Raptors used just two pitchers. Pacheco struck out four and spread three hits across his three frames.

The two teams play again at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
