Around Utah sports: 4 women’s volleyball teams in NCAA bracket
Former Utah prep football players stand out in college this week

BYU (22-8) is the highest-rated of the four. The Cougars earned a No. 5 seed, just shy of hosting a regional, so BYU is on the road to Los Angeles where No. 4 USC is hosting. BYU plays Cal Poly (25-7) at 6 p.m. MST Thursday. The winner advances to face either USC (24-6) or Princeton (18-6) at 8 p.m. Friday.
Utah State (23-7) is on a 21-match win streak after going undefeated against the Mountain West through the regular season and conference tournament. The Aggies face No. 7 Tennessee (20-7) at 4:30 p.m. MST Thursday. That plays in Tempe, Arizona, where No. 2 Arizona State (26-3) hosts the regional and faces Coppin State (23-11). The winners play at 6 p.m. Friday.
Davis High alum Loryn Helgesen, a sophomore outside hitter, represents Northern Utah with the Aggies.
Utah (15-14) is in Nebraska to face No. 6 Northern Iowa (25-5) at 3:30 p.m. MST Thursday. The winner advances to take on the victor of host and No. 3 seed Creighton (25-5), who takes on Big Sky tournament champ Northern Colorado (17-15). The second round is at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Freshman middle blocker Katelynn Field, a Weber High alum, represents Northern Utah with the Utes.
Utah Valley (16-10) starts with host and No. 2 seed Stanford (27-4) at 8 p.m. MST Friday. The winner gets either No. 7 South Dakota State (23-4) or Arizona (16-12) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Former Morgan High standout Alyvia Jaffa, a sophomore middle blocker, plays for the Wolverines.
Defending national champion Penn State and senior middle blocker Maggie Mendelson, a Fremont High alum, is a No. 8 seed and landed in the regional with No. 1 Texas.

SYRACUSE ALUM GETS NOD
Former Syracuse High standout Brevin Hamblin was named an honorable mention for the All-Mountain West football team with Utah State. Hamblin started 11 games for the Aggies, leading the team in defensive touchdowns (one) and forced fumbles (two), and second on the team with 102 tackles.
ROY ALUM NABS WEEKLY HONOR
The Big 12 Conference named Roy High alum Parker Kingston as special teams player of the week after his 55-yard punt return touchdown for BYU last week. He also added six catches for 126 yards to key a win over UCF.
Kingston is the only Big 12 player with a punt return touchdown this season and leads the conference at 13.2 yards per punt return.
The junior has three career such touchdowns, trailing BYU’s all-time leaders James Dye and Golden Richards with four.
LOCAL GOLF PRO EARNS STATE AWARD
Utah Section PGA announced Monday that Zach Johnson, the head professional at Davis Park Golf Course, was named Utah’s Player of the Year for the third time. Johnson got the nod after five victories and a top-three finish in the Utah Section PGA Professional Championship for the 2025 season.
