Hamblin wins Mountain West weekly award
Former Syracuse High multi-sport standout Brevin Hamblin made big plays for Utah State football last week on his way to winning the Mountain West Conference defensive player of the week award.
The junior defensive back had several career firsts for the Aggies in a 51-14 home win over Nevada. Hamblin notched his first career interception and touchdown on the same play, picking off a Nevada pass and returning it 38 yards for a touchdown.
Hamblin also recovered a fumble for the first time in his college career, and totaled eight tackles and one sack in the victory.
Utah State’s defense held Nevada without a first down in the first half during the dominant win.
Hamblin was a Standard-Examiner All-Area First Team selection for football and Second Team selection for boys basketball in his senior season (2022-23) at Syracuse High School, then played two football seasons at Utah Tech before transferring to USU this season.
Trujillo gets weekly hoops honor
Former Davis High standout Chance Trujillo was named WAC men’s basketball newcomer of the week for his play in a busy, four-game week for Utah Tech to open the college season.
Trujillo averaged 13.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in wins over South Dakota and Bethesda, and losses to Arizona and Arizona State. The 6-foot-4 guard is in his first season at Utah Tech after playing 2024-25 at Snow College.
Trujillo was a Standard-Examiner All-Area Second Team quarterback and First Team basketball player his senior season at Davis (2020-21), which concluded with winning the 6A boys basketball title and state tournament MVP honors.
Trujillo redshirted at Weber State in 2021-22 before serving a mission and will return with the Trailblazers when they visit Weber State on Dec. 20.
Women’s soccer tournament draw complete
Utah has three representatives in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament after the field was revealed Monday.
Utah State, winners of the Mountain West tournament, got the close draw to play at No. 5 seed BYU, winners of the Big 12 tournament, at 6 p.m. Friday.
Utah Valley, winners of the WAC, will be at No. 3 seed Colorado at 7 p.m. Friday.
Montana, who defeated Weber State in the Big Sky tournament final in a PK shootout, travels to face No. 4 seed Washington at 8 p.m. Friday.
WSU alum wins Finals MVP
Former Weber State men’s basketball sharpshooter Scott Bamforth (2010-13) lifted two trophies Monday as his latest pro club won the Finals for Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, Mexico’s professional league.
Bamforth, 36, a longtime fixture in the Spanish ACB, Spain’s top league, went quickly from his 2024-25 season with CB Granada, a season finished on May 30, to sign with Fuerza Regia in Monterrey, Mexico, to open that season on July 4.
Bamforth became the No. 2 scorer during the Mexican LNBP regular season at 17 points per game. After a third-place finish, Fuerza Regia made a run to the league finals and Bamforth was the star as his team defeated Diablos Rojos (Benito Juarez) in five games for the title.
Bamforth scored 25 points in the Game 5 clincher. He was named Finals MVP, averaging 18.4 points per game in the series while shooting a blistering 19 of 36 (52.8%) from the 3-point line.
