WASHINGTON TERRACE — A football battle between two Bonneville High feeder schools played out on Bonneville’s field Thursday afternoon and came down to the last play.

South Ogden Junior High (7-2) stormed back from a 22-0 deficit and, with three seconds left trailing 28-22, had the ball at the TH Bell 22. As time expired, a pass to the end zone was picked off by Jaden Gallegos near his sideline, where he was instantly mobbed by teammates as his Minutemen (8-1) won the Weber School District junior high football championship.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bell quarterback Koy Dixon got the Minutemen on the board with a 2-yard rush early in the second quarter.

Less than two minutes later, Dixon hit Jakobie Brown on a 60-yard touchdown pass to put Bell up 14-0.

South Ogden’s first threat came on a drive led by a Jacob Criddle 11-yard rush that reached the Bell 14, but a fumble ended that drive with 2:28 left in the half.

Dixon connected with Gallegos for a 28-yard pass that put Bell in business late in the half, but an acrobatic tip from Kord Shaw set up an interception for Preston Williams and South Ogden kneeled out the half.

Bell appeared to put the game away to open the second half when Jordan Jacquez scampered 49 yards for a score and a 22-0 lead.

But South Ogden answered. Williams connected on passes to Avery Eberhard and Kole Minnoch, setting up a 20-yard Tom Turpin touchdown run.

On their next drive, the Spartans needed only one play as Shaw sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown. Jacob Criddle converted his second two-point try and suddenly the score was 22-16 with 1:46 left in the third quarter.

Bell again seemed to put the game away on its next possession, a grueling 7 minute, 41 second drive on the legs of Carson Jones and Dixon. It ended when Dixon punched it in from 9 yards out to take a 28-16 lead with 3:57 left in the game.

South answered with a Xander Pentico fumblerooski rush for 43 yards and Shaw punched it in from 8 yards out, making it 28-22 with 2:42 left.

Using all its timeouts and finally forcing a Bell punt, South Ogden got the ball back with 14 seconds left. Another fumblerooski play, taken 42 yards by Eduardo Oseguera, put the Spartans 22 yards away where Gallegos ended the game with the interception.

For South Ogden, Shaw finished with 104 rushing yards. Sime Havili had 33 and Turpin added 25. Williams completed three passes for 30 yards. Eberhard recorded a first-quarter interception.

For TH Bell, Jones totaled 77 rushing yards, while Dixon added 62 and Jacquez 61. Dixon completed six passes for 138 yards through the air. Gallegos pulled in 40 receiving yards.
