Weber State guard Kori Pentzer (4) drives against Idaho State's Estefania Ors (14) on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

Weber State women’s basketball held the lead for more than a quarter’s time down the stretch Saturday hosting Idaho State in a battle for second place, leading by as many as seven with 5:15 to go.

Estefania Ors scored in the paint to put ISU up one with 1:27 left. WSU answered on a three-point play from Jadyn Matthews to go up two.

With a needed stop, however, ISU fouled to put Daryn Hickok at the line with 30 seconds left and she missed both free throws.

After a timeout, the Bengals passed to Montana Oltrogge for 3. She used a dribble to side-step a closing defender and calmly knocked in a game-winning triple with 3 seconds left, giving Idaho State a 67-66 victory.

Emma Torbert led Weber State (7-7, 3-2 Big Sky) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Matthews totaled 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Hickok added nine points and eight rebounds, and Kori Pentzer chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

Ors again led ISU (8-6, 4-1) with 27 points, and Oltrogge knocked down four 3-pointers on the way to 16 points.

Weber State next hits the road for the first time in more than a month with a road trip to Idaho (Jan. 13) and Eastern Washington (Jan. 15).

MEN VS. ISU RESCHEDULED

Weber State men’s basketball had its Saturday game at Idaho State, postponed due to COVID-19 protocols at ISU, rescheduled to Monday, Jan. 17, the Big Sky announced Friday.

This will give Weber State a crowded stretch of seven games over 16 days. The Wildcats next host Idaho (Jan. 13) and Eastern Washington (Jan. 15) ahead of the Monday trip to Pocatello, then host the same Bengals on Thursday, Jan. 20 in Ogden. That precedes a three-game road trip from Jan. 24-29 at Southern Utah, Northern Colorado and Sacramento State.

Northern Arizona and Southern Utah were a late scratch Saturday and the number of postponed games has mounted near a point where any further postponements will be difficult to reschedule by season’s end.

Elsewhere in the Big Sky, Sacramento State picked up its first conference win in convincing fashion, leading by double digits for long stretches in an 85-71 win at previously unbeaten Northern Colorado.

Sunday evening, Montana State defeated Montana 66-59, dropping each to 4-2 (neither has had a game postponed to this point). That creates a three-way tie for first place between Weber State, Southern Utah and Northern Colorado at 3-1.
