Weber State softball: Chong makes history with homers but WSU loses conference series
Weber State softball’s Mika Chong made history with her bat but her team suffered a rare series defeat April 7-8 in Ogden.
Chong became the first WSU player to homer three times in one game, the third-ever in Big Sky Conference history. But the Wildcats dropped 2 of 3 against Portland State in the team’s first conference series and first home games of the 2023 season.
Chong hit 6 of 10 and drove in six runs during the series, garnering her Big Sky player of the week honors.
It’s the first time since 2018 that Weber State has lost a regular-season conference series, snapping an 18-series win streak.
WSU (7-22, 1-2 Big Sky) resumes conference play this weekend at Sacramento State.

In the series opener Friday, WSU inched to two small leads before Portland State’s Trinity Holden launched a three-run homer as part of a six-run fourth inning, sending the Vikings to a high-scoring win and handing WSU pitcher Mandy Johnson the loss.
Mia Rushton and Gianna Memoli each tripled in the contest for WSU. Faith Hoe hit a double. PSU hit three home runs in the win.

Chong’s historic game opened play for the first of two games Saturday. The sophomore hit a solo home run in the first, a two-run dinger in the third and another solo shot in the sixth. Her third-inning homer put WSU up 3-2 but ultimately, her four RBIs were the only runs WSU would score.
PSU’s Allicitie Frost pitched a complete game for the win. Brooke Hatfield took the loss in her 3 1/3-inning start.

Hatfield bounced back in Saturday’s second game, pitching around five walks and four hits to hold Portland State scoreless in the final 4 1/3 innings to secure a win for the Wildcats.
KC Whiting homered in the first to tie the game 1-1. Sarah Ruhl’s two-run double in the fourth put the Wildcats ahead 3-2 and Chong singled in Victoria Rey for the final run in the fifth.
