Weber State notebook: Football lands another 3-star commit in Mott; Jones player of the week again

Weber State players take the field for an FCS playoffs second-round game against Montana State on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, in Bozeman, Mont.

With the regular signing period opening in one week, Weber State football has secured the commitment of yet another three-star-rated player.

Carson Mott, a defensive end/edge player from Simi Valley, California, announced his commitment to Weber State on social media Monday.

Mott was committed to Colorado before CU hired Deion Sanders, and Mott was one of several high school players who were told the school was not honoring their commitments made to the previous coaching staff.

In a December 2022 profile published in The Athletic, Mott said he received offers from San Diego State, Washington, Washington State, New Mexico State, Idaho, Hawaii and Montana after Colorado cut him loose.

“It was a huge mess. I actually never got contacted by Deion or any of his new (on-field) staff,” Mott told The Athletic, saying he was called by an assistant director of player personnel. “They told me that coach Deion didn’t want to honor my commitment and hung up the phone … a lot of us had our options closed for months now being committed to Colorado. So we hadn’t reached out to any school. It was a whole big deal.”

Mott also had offers from California (where he was committed last summer before coaching changes), Washington State, Utah State and four other Mountain West schools.

Fourteen players have either signed in December’s early period (five) or committed since then (nine) for Weber State’s 2023 class. Of those, seven are rated as three-star recruits by 247 Sports. Signed are running back Major Givens and quarterbacks Richie Munoz and Dylan Gutierrez, all from California. Committed since December are Mott, California safety BJ Carey, Washington defensive end Cade Clyde and Texas receiver/kick return Jayleen Record, an SMU transfer who was rated at three stars out of high school.

That list of three-star players does not include Dahlyn Jones, a tight end from Desoto, Texas, who announced his commitment to Weber State on Sunday. Jones had five FBS offers, including Power 5 offers from Arizona, Arkansas, and Kansas, but did not sign anywhere in the early period.

In other recruiting business, local preps Elias Parkinson (Layton) and Brevin Hamblin (Syracuse), both of which have offers from Weber State, posted photos of their official visits from the weekend on social media. Roy offensive lineman Cole Millward also holds an offer from WSU.

“Signing Day,” which opens the standard signing period, is Wednesday, Feb. 1.

JONES POTW AGAIN

After another great set of games for Weber State men’s basketball, third-year forward Dillon Jones has again been named the Big Sky Conference player of the week — his third this season and sixth of his career — by averaging 17.5 points, 14 rebounds and five assists per game in two wins.

In just 29 minutes of a win over Portland State, Jones totaled 17 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Then to beat Sacramento State, he totaled 18 points and 14 rebounds while scooping in a game-winning drive with 6 seconds left.

The two performances gave Jones 11 double-doubles on the season, fifth-most in the country. Jones is also the best defensive rebounder in the country, averaging 10.2 defensive rebounds per game and posting a defensive rebounding percentage of 36.9% (that number is 42.5% in conference games) — both of which are No. 1 by a significant margin.
