OGDEN — Weber State has completed its men’s basketball coaching staff after losing a coach to a conference foe.

The Wildcats have hired Utah State’s David Marek as an assistant coach. The move was first reported by HoopDirt.com, a report the school confirmed to the Standard-Examiner.

The official announcement is expected sometime next week.

Marek replaces Steve Smiley, who left Weber State for an associate head coaching position at Northern Colorado.

Marek was on Utah State’s staff for two years, one as a video coordinator and one as director of player development. Prior to his time in Logan, Marek was a video coordinator and graduate assistant for the Idaho State Bengals.

Idaho State is not Marek’s only tie to the Big Sky Conference. He played for the Southern Utah Thunderbirds from 2005 to 2009, where he faced Damian Lillard in non-conference games.

After his time in Cedar City, Marek played professionally for three years, including in his home country of the Czech Republic, in Spain and in Slovakia.
