Weber State defeated Utah Valley in game one, advancing to play host UNLV in the evening, a game the Wildcats lost.
In other Wednesday action, UC Riverside beat Nevada 10-0.
Nevada and Utah Valley open Thursday’s schedule with an elimination game at 1 p.m. MDT. The winner plays Weber State at 4 p.m. in another elimination game. In the winner’s bracket, UNLV faces UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
WEBER STATE 14, UTAH VALLEY 7
Weber State used a late-inning offensive explosion and moved to 4-0 this season against in-state foe Utah Valley to win its first game of the NISC.
UVU put up five runs in the fourth inning for a 7-3 lead.
But the Wildcats answered with their own five-spot. Courtney Pestka, McKinley Brinkerhoff, Takesha Saltern, Ashlyn Visser, Ali Belloc and Rae Gall all singled in the frame, with Gall’s hit driving in two to give WSU an 8-7 lead. The rally was helped by a Syd White sacrifice bunt and a UVU error.
Visser drove in a run during a two-run fifth. Brinkerhoff and Saltern each drew bases-loaded walks in a four-run sixth. In all, Weber State totaled 15 hits, all singles.
While the offense kept the turnstiles going, Tatiana Su’esu’e brought it home in the circle. She pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits, walking none, striking out two and allowing zero runs.
UNLV 4, WEBER STATE 1
As well as the Wildcats hit in the day’s opener, it was a struggle in the nightcap as Weber State fell to UNLV.
Weber State committed four errors and gave up nine hits while tallying only five hits for itself.
In the sixth, a Landi Hawker sac bunt put runners on second and third with one out. After Ashlyn Visser lined out to third base, Molly Horne singled to score Syd White and cut UNLV’s lead to 3-1, but Chloe Camarero struck out to end the frame.
UNLV scored on RBI singles in the first and the third innings, a Visser error in the fourth and a White error in the sixth.
