Weber State softball’s 2018 season will continue thanks to its Big Sky regular season co-championship.
The Wildcats were invited to the National Invitational Softball Championship, a tournament in its second season, and were listed as an automatic qualifier by virtue of being a conference champion.
WSU lost both its games in the 2018 Big Sky tournament, which Sacramento State won to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Weber State begins the 17-team tournament in Las Vegas at a pod hosted by UNLV. The tournament is split into four regions of double-elimination play. Winners of those regions advance to the NISC championship round.
The Wildcats (27-24) open play at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday in a game against Utah Valley (21-29), a team against which WSU is 3-0 this season. The winner plays UNLV that night, while UC Riverside (33-22) and Nevada (25-25) round out the Vegas pod.
Northern Colorado, Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas are the other regional hosts.
WSU hosted a regional in 2017 — the inaugural NISC — which it won over Boise State, Utah State and San Diego to advance to what was a six-team championship round last year when a total of 26 teams comprised a six-region tournament.
