Axel Zeuthen

1935 – 2021

Former Ogden resident, Fred Zeuthen, died on Saturday October 30, 2021.

Axel Frederick Zeuthen was born on April 6, 1935, in Greenport, New York. He was the first child of Axel and Marie (Kepplinger) Zeuthen, who were immigrants from Denmark and Austria. During World War II, the family moved to Los Angeles.

On February 8, 1958, Fred married Carolyn D. Maxwell. After serving time in the US Army, Fred settled in California with Carolyn and started a family. Fred worked as an engineer and manager for Northrop Corp, Autonetics, Rockwell International, and TRW.

In 1977, Fred and Carolyn moved their family to Ogden, Utah, where Fred managed TRW’s Weapon Systems Engineering Department. He retired in 1997. While in Ogden, he and Carolyn met life-long friends and enjoyed tennis, photography, skiing, off-roading, and hiking. After retiring, Fred and Carolyn traveled to Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe.

Fred served on the board of The Ogden Nature Center, serving as Board Chair in 2001 and organizing the Nature Center’s capital campaign. Fred also volunteered delivering food to the needy through Share, Inc. for nearly 20 years where he served as Board Chair. Fred was active in Ogden’s Catholic community and a member of Holy Family Parish.

In 2015, Fred and Carolyn started a new life in Portland, Oregon, to be closer to their grandchildren.

Fred was always quick with a joke and a treasured friend to many. His family will miss him and his smile forever.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carolyn D. Zeuthen; their sons, Greg (Linda), John, and Brian (Florinda); sister Marie Zeuthen; sister-in-law Carolyn E. Zeuthen; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Zeuthen; his son, Jeffrey M. Zeuthen; parents; and brother John.

A memorial service is pending.
