PLAIN CITY — Fremont (1-2) girls soccer scored two goals in each half to beat Copper Hills 4-2 and pick up its first win of the season.

BRIGHAM CITY — Mountain Crest and Box Elder (1-0-1) played to a 2-2 tie through the first half, then the Bees scored three unanswered goals in the second stanza for a 5-2 home win.
Region 1 was close last season. Northridge, Fremont and Syracuse both went 4-2 and tied for second behind 6-0 Weber.
Region 5 has the distinction of being the only region in the state in 2018 to have something new.
WEST JORDAN — Caroline Stringfellow netted a hat trick and the Titans sprinted to a 7-0 halftime lead on the way to a season-opening road win, 8-0.

ROY — The soccer field at Sandridge Park was quite lush for an early August girls soccer game. So lush that it was almost too thick, and it slowed things down.
SYRACUSE — The bright green shirt-clad Syracuse girls soccer team assembled in the shade behind the scoreboard.

While August brings girls soccer and prep football, the 2018-19 high school sports season began in July with St. Joseph Catholic High School's baseball opening its season with three games, as 1A baseball plays in the fall.
Weber and Layton warmed up for their high school softball game April 19 on a temperate spring day. The Weber school grounds were busy with a home soccer game near the softball field and a track meet just up the hill at the football stadium.

LAYTON — Northridge High senior Kendell Petersen on Thursday won the Female High School Athlete category in the “Best of State” awards during a gala at the Salt Palace Convention Center Grand Ballroom in Salt Lake City.
SPANISH FORK — Bear River softball hit three home runs in the first two innings to build an 8-2 lead and defeated Cedar 8-4 in the 4A state semifinals Friday at Spanish Fork Complex.
MAGNA — Ty Witt had three hits and two RBIs as Clearfield beat Cyprus 7-1 on the road Wednesday to advance to the 6A state baseball quarterfinals.
SANDY — Morgan booked a ticket to Saturday’s 3A boys soccer state championship game with a 3-2 win over American Leadership Academy in the semifinals Friday night at Alta High.
The 4A baseball and softball state playoffs begin this Saturday. At least, that’s the plan.
LAYTON — In a game delayed by lightning late in the second half, Layton boys soccer broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a score in the second stanza and clinched the Region 1 championship at home against Davis.
Davis High finished in first place at the Region 1 girls golf championships on Monday by shooting a team score of 313. The Darts won all seven region meets this season.
BOUNTIFUL — The last two-and-a-half weeks have been uniquely stressful for Mercedes Staples.

OGDEN — With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Logann Thompson hit a scorching ground ball off the Juan Diego shortstop’s glove, then beat the throw to first to drive in Justina Cheney for the winning run that gave Ogden softball a wild, come-from-behind, 21-20 region win Friday.
BRIGHAM CITY — McHailee Danner tossed a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and Bountiful softball (11-2, 6-1 Region 5) edged Box Elder (10-3, 5-2) by a 2-0 margin in a battle of first-place teams Thursday.
