Shelley Ann Holbrook Smedley

Nov 17, 2021

September 20, 1949 — November 12, 2021

Shelley Smedley of Layton, Utah, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, returned to her heavenly home on November 12, 2021.

Shelley was an ever-reliable force in the lives of her friends and family, whom she loved dearly. Always a person others could lean on, she exuded gentleness, compassion, faith and wisdom.

Born September 20, 1949 in Ogden, Utah to Mildred Child and Edwin Holbrook, Shelley spent her childhood with her brothers Steven and Scott in Washington Terrace. A life-long learner, she graduated from Bonneville High School in 1967 and from Weber State in 1971 with a degree in Sociology. At the age of 47, she was admitted to the Master of Social Work program at the University of Utah and graduated in 1998.

Shelley married Kent Smedley on March 9, 1972, in the Salt Lake Temple. They loved each other and prioritized memory-making as they built a loving home. They spent much of their 49 years of marriage on Maxine Drive in Layton, raising their children alongside lifelong friends. She loved homemaking and felt raising her children was the most rewarding thing she ever did. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her belief in and testimony of the Savior guided her life.

Shelley had an innate ability to see into the needs of others and make a difference in their lives. She loved her career as a social worker, serving 13 years at Davis Mental Health followed by employment at LDS Family Services as a mental health counselor.

She was a devoted grandmother, and freely gave her love to her grandchildren. Shelley also played an important role in the lives of her nieces and nephews in the wake of their father’s untimely death, a silver lining for her amid the tragedy.

Shelley is survived by her five children: Kristin (Craig) Smith of Bountiful; Stephanie (Bryn) Larsen of Franktown, Colo.; Kellie (Mike) Greenhalgh of Layton; Brian (Tamara) Smedley of New Canaan, Conn.; and Jed (Molly) Smedley of Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren: Brady, Makenna, Porter, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Annabelle, Olivia, Brock, Tedrah, Rial, Miles, Sarah, Russell and Holbrook; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Friends may visit the family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
