David Takashi Kano

Dec 12, 2022

January 3, 1950 – December 9, 2022

David Takashi Kano, our beloved husband, father, brother, friend, and son of God, returned to his Heavenly Father on December 9, 2022, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

David was born to Masayuki Kano and Shizue (Cecil) Nisogi on January 3, 1950, in Kaysville, UT. He spent most of his childhood years in Perry, UT playing baseball with his brothers and friends and working in the fruit stands and orchards.

David attended Box Elder High School where he participated in many activities. He was the elected second vice president student body officer for the 1967 – 1968 school year. He was a region champion wrestler and as part of the FFA raised grand champion hogs and sheep. This is a big deal since he hated getting dirty.

After graduation, David spent time working for the IRS, the Forest Service, Flying J, and Hill Airforce Base. He then received his MBA from USU before jumping full-time into owning and operating his own CPA firm. He served his community as a City Councilman (1992-1995) and was elected as Utah’s first Japanese Mayor as the Mayor of Brigham City (1998-2001). David loved his community and had the courage to act when he saw an issue that needed to be corrected.

David was married to Janet Larkin. They had two daughters and later divorced. He then married his eternal companion, Wendy Williams, on July 3, 1984, in the Ogden LDS Temple. They blended their families of two girls and three boys and added a daughter and son to complete their family.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David served in many positions. He and Wendy served as office coordinators of the Japan Nagoya Mission in 2019-2020. As the financial clerk David found so much joy serving the young missionaries and grew to love each one. He also gained a great love and respect for the wonderful people and country of his ancestors.

David is survived by his wife, Wendy; his children: Jill Kano, Amber Kano, Kelly Flygare (Andy), Thomas Kano (Kristie), Jacob Nielsen (Monica), Skylar Nielsen (Holly Addi), and Abram Nielsen (Arianne); fifteen grandchildren and siblings: Ronald, Louie, Karen, and Larry Kano.

A Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Meyer’s Mortuary in Brigham City and the Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 at the Box Elder Stake Center at 11:00 a.m. with a Viewing prior to the service from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. at the church. The funeral will be live streamed at: https://zoom.us/j/91264830798. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
