Beverly Phyllis Coy Sparks

Dec 16, 2022

Beverly Phyllis Coy Sparks 88, died December 13, 2022 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Beverly was born on August 26, 1934 in Ogden, Utah to Philip D. and Dorothy McGee Coy. Beverly was the first of 5 children and the only girl. She had four younger brothers.

Beverly married James W. Sparks on February 13, 1953 in Ogden, Utah. They were married for 57 years before his death in 2010.

Beverly worked hard her whole life. When the kids were young, she worked nights as a hostess at various restaurants in Ogden while Jim worked days at Hill Air Force Base. When her youngest daughter was 4 years old, and the older kids were old enough to care for themselves, she rented a typewriter and practiced at home until she was good enough to pass the civil service test. She was 31 years old. She then went to work as a secretary at Hill Air Force Base.

She worked there until her retirement. Once retired she found she was bored and needed something to do so she went back to work as a sales associate at JC Penney where she worked in the Ogden store until it closed. She then went to work as a sales associate at Dillards until her final retirement at the age of 79.

Beverly was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary and served as president. She was very active and enjoyed spending time with her friends.

Beverly was always talented. She made all of her daughters’ school dresses as well as all of the dresses she wore to work. She also enjoyed doing her bunka (Japanese needlepoint) classes and made many beautiful pictures for family, friends and to decorate her own home. Beverly also loved to knit. She would make sweaters and beautiful afghans. Her daughter remembers that when you would ask her who she was making the sweater for she would tell you that it depended on what size it was when it was finished.

Beverly is survived by her daughter Debbie Hadley (Leon) of Grantsville. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren Jason Hadley (Grantsville, UT) Eric Hadley (Blackfoot, lD), Daniel Hadley (Grantsville, UT), Rachael Christiansen (Grantsville, UT), Jennifer Hipwell (Plain City, UT) and Chrishna Benally (Ogden, UT); 18 great-grandchildren and her youngest brother Melvin Coy (Plain City, UT).

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 3 sons James Sparks, Jr, David Sparks, Timothy Sparks, and one daughter Tina Keoppel. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Delbert Coy, Max Coy and Michael Coy.
