Mildred June Hurst Maw

Feb 4, 2022

June 20, 1921 — February 1, 2022

Mildred June Hurst Maw, at the age of 100 years old, left this life for the next on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. She left behind her greatest treasures - daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also left a legacy of unconditional love for all, unending service, and an undying thirst for knowledge which she taught us was all you take with you to the other side.

Born in El Paso, Texas on June 20, 1921, Mildred graduated from high school at the age of 15 and attended Brigham Young University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business, finance, and journalism, and another degree in Spanish, earning honors and a nomination into Who’s Who in American Universities. She pursued graduate studies at Northwestern University. After graduation she worked as a secretary for the Deaf and Blind School in Ogden, the Southern Pacific Railroad in Texas, GE, and Utah Senator Watkins in Washington, D.C. She later was an instructor of business skills at Weber State.

On May 29, 1958, she married her noble and loving husband, Grant Streeper Maw in the SLC Temple, and had three daughters, Meridee, Cynthia, and Jeanette. She served in many callings for her Church, including Relief Society President for the Ogden 73rd Ward, and Gospel Doctrine Teacher for 25 years until she was 85. Mildred was a proud member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and a dedicated genealogist who worked tirelessly to assure temple work was completed for her ancestors and more.

Mildred served four missions for the LDS Church: Mexico covering El Paso, TX, to the Panama Canal, Ogden Spanish Speaking, SLC Genealogical, and Spanish-Speaking Baton Rouge, LA, with her husband. Even at 100 years of age, she still spoke eloquent Spanish.

Mildred was a friend to all that knew her and maintained close friendships for decades with many. Her granddaughter, Jessica McMurtry, summed up her life as “100 Years of Loving the World. 100 Years of the World Loving You Right Back.”

The family wishes to thank her loving caretakers who became dear and beloved friends to her and her family. Mildred is survived by her daughters Meridee Theresa Maw Calder (Glen), Cynthia Ann Maw, Jeanette Maw McMurtry (John), 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 12 p.m. at the Kingston Ward, 1425 Kingston Drive. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
