Roma Freeman Stephens

Mar 30, 2022

Roma Freeman Stephens, passed away March 27, 2022 in Kaysville, Utah. She was born to Ernest and Ruby Viola Kotter Freeman on September 27, 1923, in Brigham City, Utah.

She graduated from Box Elder High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Utah State. After graduation, she taught school in Plain City, Utah.

Roma met her future husband, Verlin Clark Stephens, at an Institute dance and waited for him while he was away in the military during World War II. When he returned from the war they were married on June 27, 1946, in Logan Utah. They were married for 64 years.

After their marriage, they moved to Kansas for Verlin’s school. When he finished school they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they raised their family. After retirement, they moved back to Layton, Utah.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. She was a great example of how ministering should be done. She volunteered for many church service opportunities. During the Vietnam War years, she lovingly cared for many young servicemen who were stationed near her home. She never knew how many would show up for Sunday dinner, but she fed them all.

She enjoyed crocheting scrubbies for everyone, cooking, teaching hundreds of people how to make homemade candy canes, and caring for and supporting her family in their interests. She loved to travel and visited many states as well as Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

Roma is survived by her children, Nancy (Roger) Lincoln, Mark (Karen) Stephens, Karma (Douglas) Owen, Eileen (Clark) Moss and Duane Stephens; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 1 great, great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Verlin; brothers, Kay and Dean Freeman; and grandson, Matthew Owen.

A special thanks to the CNAs at Whisper Cove for their loving care.
