May 3, 2022

January 19, 1929 — April 26, 2022

Lupe, LUPE!

“Yes, Mama.” It’s time to come home mijito. “Aw Mom, do I have to? I’m still playing with my family and friends.” No, she says, it’s time to come Home. Besides, I haven’t seen you since you were about 13 months old. Your PAPA is waiting for you, as well as your brothers & sisters. “Ok….. I’m coming,” he said as he shuffled his feet, thinking of all the things he did in his short 93 years of this life. “I’ll see you guys later.” As he slowly walks up to the door, he turns around and yells out to no one in particular, “This world has been good to me! Thank you World!” And just like that, he went home to be with PAPA, his wife, family & friends.

Lupe Colunga, (93) died just the other day surrounded by family on April 26, 2022 of just being tired. He was happy to go home. He was born back in January of “29”, to Lucio & Luciana (Velarde) in Grand Junction Co. He, along with his many brothers & sisters, traveled the west working in the fields & making adobe homes, many of which are still standing today. He worked for Wonder Bread, then for Hercules Aerospace, building rocket motors for our Defense.

He married Ann Marie Garcia (1929-2017) in the summer of “48”, and by the end of “53” there were the “3 T’s” running around. They divorced in spring of “80”. In the late summer of 1980, he married Reta Fife Schultz (1935-2021). Lupe suffered a stroke in “01” that took out the left side of his body. His wife, Reta, took such great care of him. She was a blessing by his side all those years. She died just months ago in late summer of “21”. “Pop” had such a great attitude. He was truly a fun person to be around! You could go visit him & he would cheer you up with stories of growing up with his family, and how hard life was in the fields. Bless both of our parents for keeping their boys, the “3 T’s” out of the fields by all their hard work.

He leaves behind still playing in the yard, his 7 orphan kids: #1 Jack (Terry) & Kay Colunga, #2 Tom & Gail Colunga, #3 Tobias & Colleen Colunga, Paul (deceased) & Candy Schultz, Dale & Barbara Schultz, Margie Larsen (deceased), Loren & Debbie Schultz. A bunch of grandkids, a slew of great-grandkids, & even a few great great grandkids, as well as his extended family.

The Colunga / Schultz family would like to thank all those folks that came & visited with Lupe & Reta all these years. We hope you all walked out the front door with gladness in your heart after your visit with them.

Thank you, PAPA, for letting us have our dad all these years.

And just like that, they’re both together again!

“Thank you world”

We would like to Thank Sunridge Assisted Living of Layton, and Atlas Home Care & Hospice for their care, as well as the doctors & nurses at North Davis Hospital. And last but not least Dr. Degrauw.
