Steven Mark Ashby
December 18, 1945 – October 8, 2022
Steven returned to his Heavenly Father on the morning of Saturday, October 8, 2022. Recently, he suffered multiple health problems that he was unable to overcome. He was loved deeply and will be sorely missed. He was born on December 18, 1945, in Salt Lake City to Glen and Emily Bohner Ashby. He was the youngest of seven children. He lived in Clearfield, Utah for several years and then moved to Kaysville, Utah where he grew up.
All his family members were very active in sports, and he became a sports enthusiast at an early age. Steve played a variety of sports and was a talented athlete. He attended Davis High School where he played basketball and tennis. He received a basketball scholarship to Utah State University. His love of participating in sports continued throughout his life. He enjoyed playing tennis and on various church sports teams. He became an avid golfer. He enjoyed golfing with many of his friends and had the good fortune to have three “hole in one” golf balls.
He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. While there he served at the Mormon Pavilion at the World’s Fair in New York City. He served a Church Service Mission at the Layton Bishops’ Storehouse with his wife, Marsha. In addition to formal missionary service, he had the opportunity of serving his widowed mother and many single sisters in his various wards over the years. He spent countless hours performing yard work and home repairs. He has served a widowed neighbor for many years, and she recently said that he “treated her like his mother.”
Following his mission he married his high school sweetheart, Marsha Flint Ashby. They were married on September 8, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 55 years. Elder Spencer W. Kimball performed their sealing ordinance. It was a special honor. They lived in Kaysville until 1988.
After their marriage, Steven completed his Accounting Degree at Weber State University. He worked for various accounting and business firms. The last 25 years of his career he was the Finance Director for Layton City.
He entered the United States Army on June 16, 1970 and served in the Vietnam Campaign. After he returned from Vietnam he was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky where Marsha and his daughter Chenelle joined him. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 5, 1972, and the family returned to Kaysville, Utah. They moved to Layton, Utah in 1988.
Steven had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved his Heavenly Father and his Savior, Jesus Christ. Over the years he served in many callings – Primary Teacher, Young Men’s President, Priesthood Quorum leadership and High Councilor. He served in multiple callings as Ward Finance Clerk, Stake Clerk and Ward Executive Secretary. He loved those he served with and shared a special bond with them.
Steve loved traveling with his family and friends. He and Marsha had the opportunity to travel to many areas for work and for leisure. He played golf in many parts of the United States. He especially enjoyed visiting Germany when his daughter’s family lived there. His ancestry was from Germany, and he was able to visit some towns where his ancestors had lived.
Steven is survived by his wife, Marsha, and his five children, Chenelle Houston (Douglas); Anjanette McNeely (Mark); Trenton Ashby (Shellie); Jocelyn Ishikawa (Kensei); Rachel Chase (Ben); 12 grandchildren and two great granddaughters. He loved them all so much and had the opportunity of playing with and teaching them. He was a great example of integrity and charity. He is survived by two brothers, Ralph Ashby and David Ashby.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4.
