Former Ogden resident and attorney, Carolyn D. Zeuthen, died on Monday, November 20, 2023, in Oregon.
Carolyn was born on December 15, 1938, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She was the first child of Selwyn and Alberta (Parry) Maxwell. Carolyn spent her early years in Carbondale, Pennsylvania where Carolyn became the older sister of Diane and Gail. After World War II, the family moved to Los Angeles, eventually settling in Downey, California.
On February 8, 1958, Carolyn married Axel “Fred” Zeuthen, and they soon became the parents of three active boys. In 1973, Carolyn returned to college part-time while raising her three boys and supporting local community organizations.
In 1977, Carolyn and Fred moved their family to Ogden, Utah, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Weber State University. While in Ogden, she and Fred met life-long friends and enjoyed tennis, skiing, Utah back-country exploring, and mountain hiking. In 1983, Carolyn attended law school at Pepperdine University, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1986 at the age of 47. Carolyn practiced law in Ogden from 1987 until 2015.
Over the years, Carolyn and Fred traveled throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the North American Continent.
In 2015, Fred and Carolyn started a new life in Portland, Oregon, to be closer to their grandchildren.
Carolyn is survived by her sons, Greg (Linda), John, and Brian (Florinda); sister Gail (Murdoch) Fraser; sister-in-law Marie Zeuthen; sister-in-law Carolyn E. Zeuthen; brother-in-law Tom Russel; six grandchildren, Marah (Ryan) Mendes, Holly M. Lampman, Michael (Mollie) Zeuthen, Eric (Meredith Kelleher) Zeuthen, Christopher R. Zeuthen, and John M. Zeuthen; nine great-grandchildren; nieces Sandra Renfro, Gail McKay, and Erin Cortell; nephews, John F. Zeuthen, Jr., Kevin Zeuthen, and Ian McKay. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Fred Zeuthen; their son, Jeffrey M. Zeuthen; her parents; her sister, Diane Maxwell Russell; and brother-in-law, John F. Zeuthen, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation. A private memorial service and public remembrance are pending.
