Richard “Dick” William Hoelle
July 10, 1940 — December 20, 2023
Richard William Hoelle, affectionately known as Dick, was born on July 10, 1940, in Ft. Wayne, IN, and embarked on his remarkable journey through life. On December 20, 2023, at the George E. Wahlen Veteran Home in Ogden, UT, Dick’s earthly voyage came to a peaceful end. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love that will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends.
Dick’s early years were marked by dedication and service to his country. He proudly served as a veteran of the Cold War, committing six years to the United States Navy. Upon his return to civilian life, Dick found a calling that would become a lifelong passion. He dedicated 23 years of service to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-2 as a part-time volunteer, holding various leadership roles, including Division and Flotilla Commander. His unwavering commitment earned him numerous awards and accolades, a testament to his devotion and excellence. He worked full-time for Utah Door Systems, Crawford Door and Acmor Door before retiring in 2014.
Dick found a love that would forever change his life. On September 24, 1975, he married his beloved Julie, and together, they embarked on a journey of love and shared adventures. Their boats, Starfire and the houseboat Julianna, carried them across the serene waters of Strawberry Reservoir and Jordanelle, nurturing their passion for the outdoors. Whether casting a line into the waters or hiking through the breathtaking Uinta Mountains, Dick reveled in the beauty of nature.
Dick’s love for the arts was equally profound. He and Julie shared a deep appreciation for plays, musicals, and symphonies, creating cherished memories with their family. Yet, above all, Dick’s heart belonged to his family, especially his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their laughter and joy brought immense happiness to his life.
Even after relocating to the Veteran’s Home, Dick remained an active and engaged member of the community. He enthusiastically participated in various committees and activities, relishing the excursions to plays, scenic drives, and dining adventures at local restaurants. His zest for life and camaraderie with fellow residents brought light to their days.
Dick is survived by his sons, Brett (Tammie) of Billings, MT; Bart (Teena) of Napa Valley, CA; and Bryant of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Anne (Russel) Everill of West Valley, UT; son-in-law, Bryant Garrett of Ogden, UT; 14 adoring grandchildren, 7 precious great-grandchildren; his sister, Sharon (Homer) Warlick of Cuenca, Ecuador; and a vast circle of dear friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Julie Hoelle; their daughter, Corrine Garrett; son, Kimball Conrad (K.C) Carter; grandson, Mitchell Garrett; and his cherished dog, Blair.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Dick will be held at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park at a later date. Family and friends will receive notification when the event is scheduled. The care of his final arrangements has been entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
