Paul B. Nicholas, 70, passed away on June 19, 2023, in Salt Lake City. Paul was born on February 3, 1953, at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines to Paul and Barbara Nicholas. Paul graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber State University.

By the mid ’70’s Paul had become an important fixture in the world of Freestyle skiing and a permanent Salt Lake City resident. Paul’s devotion to the sport led to a 35-year career in Freestyle skiing and Paul’s service as both a World Cup and Olympic judge in the sport. Paul helped Freestyle skiing become an official Olympic event.

Paul holds the International Skiing Federation (F.I.S.) Judge’s Certification/Legitimation Card #1 and judged tour events including 20 years of World Cup events and the Olympic Games in 1988 & 1994. Paul retired from active judging in 2006. In 2020, Paul was nominated for induction into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

In conjunction with his skiing career, Paul worked at Mills Publishing as a Senior Account Executive from 1982 to his death. Paul worked to promote the Arts as well as Sports and he valued all the relationships he enjoyed with many special event venues and trade organizations throughout central Utah.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Barbara Nicholas and brother Gary. He is survived by his two sisters, Connie (Gary) Cline of Star, ID, and Teri Nicholas of Huber Heights, OH and his two brothers, Michael (Claire) Nicholas of Columbus, OH and Patrick (Jae) Nicholas of Las Vegas, NV. Paul is also survived by his niece Shae and nephews Brandon and Zane and his very special companion Dana Chapman of Farmington, UT.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held for Paul on Saturday, July 29th, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 4116 South, 1615 East in Salt Lake City. Parking will be on the street. In memory of Paul and his beloved Golden Retrievers, Bogie and Connor, the family asks that donations be made in Paul’s name to the Utah Humane Society at this link https://www.utahhumane.org in lieu of cards and flowers.
