Gerald G. Zabel
1937 – 2023
Gerald G. Zabel, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on October 10, 2023, just 13 days after the loss of his beloved wife, Patricia Zabel. Pat often joked that he’d be lost without her, and as it turns out, she was right, he simply didn’t want to continue this journey without her by his side. It brings solace to know that they are reunited once more.
Gerald, the only child of Rufina Zabel Graham, was born on September 20, 1937. In 1955, he embarked on a 20-year journey in the United States Air Force, serving as an Air Traffic Controller.
In 1961, Gerald married Rita Tidmore, and together they had two daughters, Robyn, and Sherie. Their family embarked on a globetrotting adventure as they were stationed on various Air Force bases worldwide. Eventually, Gerald and Rita went their separate ways.
However, destiny had a beautiful twist in store. While working a second job at the NCO Club, Gerald met Patricia Cottrell. Love blossomed, and on March 24, 1975, they tied the knot. Gerald warmly welcomed Pat’s seven children–Sheri, Tim, Cathy, Chris, Connie, Sue, and Becky–into his life. A few years later, Adam was born, solidifying their blended family, fondly referred to as “Yours, Mine, and Ours.” For nearly 50 years, Jerry, Pat, and the children made their home in Clearfield.
Gerald was a beacon of hard work and dedication. Leading by example, he instilled the value of taking pride in one’s work and giving it their all, whether it was directing airplanes in the tower or managing the front desk at the Super 8 Motel.
Throughout the years, Gerald found joy in activities such as camping, fishing, wood carving, watercolor painting, playing the guitar, and cherishing moments with his family. He adored watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play in the backyard, savoring their laughter and games.
As a long-time member of the Clearfield Community Church, Gerald actively sought answers to life’s questions, many of which he found through Men’s Bible Study classes. He devoted countless hours to researching, reading, and prayer, embodying an insightful man with unwavering faith in God.
Gerald possessed a strong will and a compassionate heart. He held those around him to a high standard but was equally forgiving of their mistakes. He earned the love and admiration of many and will be deeply missed.
May Gerald rest in peace and have his quest for knowledge satisfied by his Maker in heaven.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who supported Gerald in his final years, the compassionate nurses of Utah Home Health and Hospice, and the staff at Abbington Assisted Living.
Services to honor Gerald’s memory will be held at Clearfield Community Church on November 11, 2023, at 11AM. Interment immediately following at Clearfield City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a cause of your choice, symbolizing Gerald’s commitment to making a positive difference.
