Carol Brewer

Nov 6, 2023

1932 – 2023

With hearts full of adoration, we honor the life of Carol Brewer, born Carol Jean Shaum on January 11, 1932, in Ogden, UT. Carol, who passed away on October 30, 2023, was a remarkable woman who was known for her kindness, her listening ear, and her refusal to pass judgment on anyone. Her love for family, service, and cooking was evident to all who knew her. Her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, were her joy and she had a special bond with each and every one of them.

Carol grew up in Ogden, Utah and graduated from the historic Ogden High. Carol continued her education at Weber State and BYU. She had many friends, was very social, and continued with lifelong friendships. Carol married Her loving husband, Joseph West Brewer Jr. on September 15, 1954. They were married for 69 years.

Carol was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after converting when she was 19 years old. She held many callings over the years and loved to serve others whether it be Relief Society President, Young Women’s, Primary and many more. Carol and Joe also served three missions together.

Carol’s sense of service led her to make significant contributions to her community. She served on the Board of the Red Cross in Ogden, UT, the Board of Rape Crises in the 80’s. Carol also volunteered at Project Reality, lending a hand to those in need. She spent many hours making treats for the Festival of Trees and volunteering for Pennies by the Inch for Primary Children’s Hospital.

Mom loved to cook, and no one ever left empty handed from her home. Every December, she would make gallons of her famous clam chowder, pounds of English toffee, delicious pecan rolls and many more treats to give out to neighbors and friends. She was also a regular at Bratten’s Seafood Grotto and Emigration Market. Mom loved to entertain and neighbors living on Laird Way never went without a pool party or some kind of Carol Jean party. She was very welcoming to anyone and everyone. Friends and family meant the world to her, and she always wanted to know everyone’s story. She was like the Charlie Brown character Lucy from “The Dr. is In.” Friends would go and just chat with her. Carol was a mother, not only to us, but to many of our friends.

Carol is survived by her loving children, David (Sherrie), Laura Young, Jon (Sheri), Andy, Nancy Sparrer (Rob), daughter in law Susan, 23 grandchildren and 65 great grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph West Brewer Jr., their son, Joseph West Brewer III, her parents, Milton and Marjorie Shaum, and her siblings Milt Shaum, Jack Shaum, Joanie King, and Judy Bunn. Carol was the last survivor of her family.

Carol’s life was a beautiful composition of love, service, and an unyielding commitment to the welfare of others. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
