Roger “Shavey” Douglas Flinders
It is with great sadness, we say goodbye to our Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. His life’s journey has come to an end. No longer will he be frightened and confused by the dementia which has taken him from us.
Roger was the firstborn son to his proud and loving parents, Douglas Dean and Pearl Mary (Jackson) Flinders, on April 14, 1943.
As the oldest of six children, he learned from an early age the meaning of hard work. This work ethic continued throughout his life. The lessons he learned from his father, and the nurturing he received, created a bond between them that never left him.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had fond memories of priesthood, Boy Scouts, and the many friends growing up in Hooper.
Roger attended Hooper schools, and in 1961, graduated from Weber High School. He then studied Business and Auto Mechanic Engineering at Weber State.
In 1965, he enlisted in the Army Reserves. He proudly served until his honorable discharge in 1971.
In 1966, he married Cherrie Lindstrom. From this union, his first child, Marni was born. They were later divorced but remained friends. In 1971, he met Sandy Jackson on a blind date, and on October 1, 1971, Roger and Sandy were married. They were sweethearts for 52 years. This union brought them two boys, Troy and Cory, to join their sister Marni.
Roger’s business career started in 1967, when he opened his first Big O Tires in Layton, Utah, operating it for 16 years. In 1997, he, along with Sandy, Troy and Cory, moved to Escondido, CA. Here he opened a Big O Tires store in Miramar. In 1993, they moved back to Utah where he opened Performance Truck Accessories in Layton. In 2004, he opened Gold Star Trailer Sales in St. George. This was his last business venture, retiring in 2011.
Roger was very successful in all his endeavors and provided a wonderful life for his family. He was supported by Sandy as they made a rewarding life together. Although he worked hard, he liked to play hard as well. Roger had a passion for speed. Racing was in his DNA. The Corvette was his favorite car. He auto crossed, drag-raced, and raced circle track with Legend Cars and Nascar Truck series. He was a member of the Salt Kings and the Corvette Club of Utah. In younger years, he enjoyed Calf roping, snowmobiling, and hunting. Before he became ill, he loved to golf.
Throughout his life he loved and took pride in his family, as well as Parents and siblings.
He will be greatly missed by his bride, Sandy, his children Marni Paske (Dan) Troy Flinders (Lisa), Cory Flinders, his eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, his siblings, Karen Batchelor (Bill), Dennis Flinders (Arlene deceased), Colleen Carter (Phil), Ronald Flinders (Sheryl), Sherri Wagner (Scot), and many loyal friends.
Waiting to greet him are his parents and extended family, also a very special sister-in law, Arlene Flinders.
Rogers quote: “I’m just here on a visit, my real home’s in heaven.” Our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever. The family would like to give a special thanks to the loving and caring staff at South Ogden Post Acute.
Services will be held Monday, November 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hooper 1st Ward, 5601 S. 6100 W. Hooper, Utah. Friends may visit with family Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, Layton and Monday, November 20, 2023 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
