John Reid Phelps

Nov 23, 2023

1954 – 2022

John Reid Phelps was born November 23, 1954, to John Edmond and Marjorie Eddy Phelps (Loy) in Ogden, Utah. He passed away of natural causes at the beginning of December 2022 in Ogden, Utah.

Even though John was his given name which he preferred to be called; his family knew him as Reid. He was raised in Ogden and graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1972.

At the age of 16, his father passed away leaving a void that could not be filled. He learned many things from “Pop”. One of their greatest loves was playing the guitar. Music came naturally to Reid. He didn’t need to take lessons; he could play by ear. Pop also taught him how to be a mechanic. Because of this knowledge he was a great role model for his younger brother Dennis.

Growing up his best friend was always his sister Kathy. They had a special bond that not everyone could understand. She understood his sarcastic sense of humor. This was obvious just by looking around and seeing all the things that Kathy made for him that fit his personality. They shared many childhood adventures and shenanigans together and always remained close.

Reid moved to Rock Springs, Wyoming to work in the oil fields. This is where he met Katherine Collier. They were married in September of 1980 in Ogden. Together he had two daughters Christina and Tiffany. They were later divorced.

Reid may have had a hard time expressing himself, however, his pride and joy were always his two daughters. He was extremely proud of them and their many accomplishments.

Reid eventually returned home to Ogden. He enjoyed spending time with his sister Karen (affectionately nicknamed Carrot or Creep). Whether they were skiing at Powder Mountain or tubing down the Ogden River it was always an adventure with a lot of laughter.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, stepfather Edward Loy; brother Dennis Phelps; niece Madelyn Roberts; several uncles, aunts and cousins.

He is survived by his daughters Christina Phelps (James Shilling) of Colorado and Tiffany (B.J.) Leonard of Pennsylvania. Sisters Kathy (Jimmy) Roberts of Ogden; Karen (Rick) Hill of Willard; Uncles William Eddy of Alabama and Quent Eddy of Ogden; nephews Kelly (April) Roberts of Ogden, John (Monica) Roberts of Elwood, Jason Reid Phelps and Christopher John Phelps of Ogden; Ian Hill of Willard; nieces Melanie (Glen) Busch of Providence, Karlee Hill (Edgar Pardo) of South Ogden. Several great nieces and nephews and even a few great-greats.

Our family would like to acknowledge and thank our Uncle Q for being there for Reid. He knew him better than all of us and showed him only patience and kindness. Thank You.
