Jean Lois Hachmeister
1940 – 2023
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Jean Lois Hachmeister, was called home to our loving Heavenly Father and dear Savior on October 13, 2023. She peacefully passed away in her home surrounded by her family.
Jean was born on June 24, 1940, in Ogden, UT to Julian and Lucille Palmer. She married the love of her life, Ernie Hachmeister, on June 12, 1966, in Ogden, UT. They have been together for 63 years.
Jean loved cooking and baking, and she was amazing at it. Everyone looked forward to her Christmas treats each year. She particularly loved preparing Sunday dinners and having family gathered around.
Jean also loved sewing and crocheting. She made many baby burp cloths and was constantly mending her grandkids’ clothes. She crocheted many baby blankets, washcloths, and baby doll clothes. Her specialty though was crocheting Christmas slippers for her family. Everyone looked forward to their new Christmas slippers each year.
Jean always sacrificed for those around her. She found joy in serving and dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a cook at Crestwood Care Center and later became a caregiver there before going into private caregiving. She lovingly cared for many elderly ladies and couples, including Owen & Edith Wangsgard and Mrs. Peery. She also babysat and cared for her grandkids and great-grandkids and found much joy in helping to raise them.
Jean was an avid doll collector. She appreciated the delicate details of the dolls she collected and what they represented. She also enjoyed collecting jewelry and antiques as well as coins and other fine things.
Jean also loved traveling and shopping. She particularly loved traveling to the family cabin in Star Valley, WY, going to Mount Rushmore, and weekend getaways to Wendover with her husband.
Jean’s family was her highest priority. She deeply loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren more than anything and always wanted to be surrounded by them. She loved playing games with the kids, having tea parties, and putting together puzzles. She made the holidays extra special–especially Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Being with her family was her favorite place to be.
Jean is survived by her husband, Ernie; her children, Penny Beckstead, Julie (James) Purin, and Wade Hachmeister; her sisters, Lorraine Murray, and Freda McDowell; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her son, Michael Keith Thompson; her daughter, Pamela Jean Bethel; her parents, Julian and Lucille Palmer; her brothers, George and Jay Palmer; and her sister, Dolores Sully.
Jean has been the rock and light in our family and will be deeply missed–until we meet again in Heaven. We love you!
Graveside services will be held Monday, October 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Leavitt’s Mortuary & Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th St., Ogden, UT. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately afterwards at the church on 300 Gramercy Ave., Ogden, UT.
