J. Dana Hales

1951 — 2024

J. Dana Hales, 72, passed away on April 4, 2024, a result of suffering years of major health challenges. Dana was born, along with his identical twin brother Dean, on November 30, 1951, in Burbank, California to William P. Hales and Doraine Webster Hales.

Dana, Dean, and their three brothers were raised in Kaysville, Utah. They enjoyed a childhood full of activity, sports, some mischief, and great love from a large extended family who all took part in raising the five boys.

Dana attended Davis High School where he was active in sports and student government. He was an All-State Football Player for Davis. Along with his brother, Dean, they were highly recruited to play college football. Dana also served as Senior Class President and graduated in 1970. The University of Utah was the place Dana chose to begin his college football journey. Ultimately, he and Dean left the U to serve missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dana served a mission in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Canada Mission from 1971-1973.

Marilyn Lundstrom met Dana in 1967 during their sophomore year at Davis High. After six long years of dating (and waiting), they were married on August 2, 1973, in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2023.

After serving his mission, Dana played football at Weber State University, until he left WSU to become a full-time Realtor. He was a well-known Realtor in the Ogden and Davis County areas for 43 years. He served as the President of the Ogden Board of Realtors in 1998. He enjoyed his career and the many associations he made there.

Dana was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Notably, he was a gospel scholar having read hundreds of church books along with studying the scriptures. He had a great love for completing family history work in the temple. While he was still able, he would spend hours each week as a patron in the Bountiful Temple.

Dana enjoyed playing golf, hunting for and securing way too many golf balls, being with family and friends and spending time with Marilyn.

Dana and Marilyn are the parents of three children, Hollie Knechtel (Dan), Chris (Hilary Francom), and Lori Roberts (Steve). They are the grandparents of six wonderful grandchildren, Harrison, Janie, Craig, Eliza, Casey, and Greyson.

Dana is also survived by his brothers, Don (Susan), David (Kathy), Jim (Diane), sisters-in-law Kathy Hales and Judy Hales. He was preceded in death by his father William P. Hales, his mother Doraine Webster Hales Adams, and his twin brother Dean (Kathy).

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, 11:00 am, at the Fruit Heights 6th Ward, 77 S. Orchard Drive, Fruit Heights, Utah. Friends may visit with family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

Interment will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 E. Crestwood Rd. Kaysville, Utah.
