Barbara Pytlewski-Tanzi

Celebration of Life: Barbara Jean “Bam” Pytlewski-Tanzi, formerly known as Barbara Cataldo, passed away on April 11, 2024, in Layton, Utah. She was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, wife and friend to many. Barbara was a world class Bassoonist who played classical music with unparalleled clarity and precision. Her exceptional talent led her to perform at prestigious music festivals and orchestras spanning the entire western united states for over 60 years, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of hearing her play. During her last years in Utah she played with the Orchestra at Temple Square as part of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, West Valley Symphony and the America West Symphony of Sandy, UT.

Barbara’s dedication to music extended beyond performance, as she devoted her later years to teaching and mentoring young musicians. Her passion for music also extended to playing the oboe and harp, highlighting her versatility and love for classical music.

In addition to her musical pursuits, Barbara enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including skiing, cycling, horseback riding, and traveling the world to experience new cultures and sights. Her adventurous spirit and love for exploration enriched her life and brought joy to those around her. Her spirit of adventure led her to live in many states and impact many lives with her brilliance.

Barbara’s family meant everything to her, she is survived and remembered lovingly by her husband David, daughters Ashley Smith (Michael) and Lindsay Ayn, step son Tony Tanzi, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and her loving brother Mark Cataldo (Diane). In return she has been welcomed with love and adoration by her mother Mildred, father Henry, and sister Nadia, who preceded her in death, along with her loving God whom she cherished until the end.

The family would like to express its gratitude to all those incredibly talented providers at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital who were directly responsible for her “beating” cancer for over 20 years. During this last battle Dr. Johnnie Cook was invaluable for Barbara’s well being. Dignity Home Health & Hospice provided immeasurable help for Barbara and the family. Special recognition to Nurses Emily, Morgan and Mesha, along with CNA Jessica. Visiting angles also provided an incredible service to the family, especially Jennifer and Camellia.

A memorial service to celebrate Barbara’s life will take place at Washington Heights Church in South Ogden, Utah, on June 14, 2024, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas, in honor of Barbara’s memory and the exceptional care she received there.

Barbara will be deeply missed by all who know her, but her legacy of passion, talent, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace and live forevermore with her God in glory.
