Lane C Hoyt

1950 — 2024

Lane left us on Sunday, February 4, 2024. He suffered from ill health for the last thirty years, as well as a recent bout with Covid, from which he seemed to be recovering.

Lane was born on May 15, 1950, at the old Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah to Howard Clinton Hoyt and Ruth Hoyt (nee’ Horr). He joined a family with two older sisters Sherry and Sandi. Three year later, is little brother Kim was born.

Growing up, Lane attended Ogden City schools, Madison Elementary and Central Junior High. Later, when the family moved to North Ogden, he attended Wahlquist Junior High and graduated from Weber High in the class of 1968.

After graduating from high school, Lane joined the reserves. As luck would have it, he was activated into the United States Air Force, and Honorably served during the Vietnam War Era.

Lane had many skills which led to a diverse work history. In high school, he worked at Pinky’s Drive in North Ogden as a cook. After high school, he worked in the computer room at the IRS. Which helped instill his lifelong love of computers and technology. After his military service, Lane took advantage of the GI Bill, and became a journeyman bricklayer. Several years later he earned a Contractors license. He then went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Weber State University. He created and ran the website for the Town of Huntsville for many years and helped others with his IT knowledge whenever and wherever he could.

In 1986 he married Deirdre A Gorman. She lived down the street from him on Holiday Drive in North Ogden. Each having a passing acquaintance of the other beginning when he was 12 years old and she 6 years old. Lane’s pride and joy were his children, Liam Quinn O’Gorman-Hoyt and Dylan Francis O’Gorman-Hoyt. This is when his life truly began when he became Mr. Mom.

It is impossible to relay the importance of his children in his life, and he in theirs. He taught them t-ball, baseball, basketball and soccer. He hauled his daughter’s horse all over Northern Utah in an old blue horse trailer going to junior posse events, barrel racing events, and Whoopie Girl events. He was also a Boy Scout Leader, and helped his son earn his Eagle Scout merit badge. His favorite “job” of all jobs, was when he spent five years as “Coach Hoyt” of the Snowcrest Junior High baseball team. The impact on his children’s lives was immeasurable. He helped then study math and algebra, and every other subject in school, which is evident in their accomplishments of both becoming attorneys. Their graduations from law school were two of the happiest days of his life.

Before Lane’s illness, he traveled the World. He visited Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Spain France, Italy, Ireland, England, Scandinavia, and many Caribbean Islands. Closer to home, Lane used to visit the many nooks and crannies of Utah, from ghost towns in the north to down south in the towns and canyons near Orderville and Hurricane. He was especially fond of the area due his familial roots, his great, great grandfather, Israel Hoyt, was one of the first presidents of the United Order established in Southern Utah under the direction of Brigham Young. He was also a direct descendant of Newell Knight, and Orson Spencer. His Latter-Day Saint pedigree ran deep, and he carried the torch as he was an active member of the Huntsville First Ward, holding man callings; the ward membership clerk, the stake membership clerk and the Elders Quorum president. He had recently been called to help teach a young men’s class.

In 1994 Lane was stricken with a virus, causing endocarditis, which severely damaged his heart. This resulted in a chronic diagnosis of dilated cardio-myopathy. At the time, he was not expected to live more than five years. Since that time, he was on the heart transplant list three times. It was truly a miracle that he was able to live 30 additional years, which he and his family were and are eternally grateful. In addition to the faith and prayers of many, the reason for his longevity while facing this disease was due to his phenomenal and dedicated cardiologist, Dr Stephanie Olsen, who was instrumental in recommending Lane for a heart failure study at the University of Utah for the experimental drug Carvedilol in heart failure patients.

Left behind to mourn his passing are his wife Deirdre, his son Liam (Meaghen) Hoyt, with his first grandchild due in April), daughter Dylan, his two sisters Sherry Bernard (Bill) and Sandy Hermann, and sister-in-law Sharon Gorman (Jeff Jacox).

He also leaves behind Eddy Olsen, his best friend of more than 65 years. But, there is no one in this world that will miss him more that his loyal cat, Pudds.

Lane was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and younger brother Kim.

Lane’s family would like to give a special thanks to all that helped immediately after after his passing, including Sharon Gorman, the Lewis Johnson family, Chad McKay, Larel Parkinson, Dale Maxwell, and Sue Mumford, among many others that have offered their prayers and services to his family during this difficult time.

Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at the Huntsville 1st Ward, 277 South 7400 East, Huntsville, UT.

Viewings will be held at the church on Tuesday, February 13th from 6 to 8 pm and Wednesday prior to the service from 10:40 to 11:40 am.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery, 20th and Madison Ave., Ogden, UT.
