Joan Powell Skeen

Feb 14, 2024

1934 — 2024

With the tip of a cowboy hat, we say goodbye to our beloved Joan also known to many as Doan Da Doan, Joan Capone, Joannie, Josie, and Gramma Joan. Born on a sunny day in Ogden, UT on August 25, 1934, to Venis and Julian Powell. Joan spent her life making others feel valued and loved. She kept her home and yard immaculate and was a confidant, counselor, and friend to all. Joan had a knack for noticing the unnoticed, and being generous to all, including strangers.

Joan was a charismatic woman with a love for Willie Nelson, cowboy boots, and the country way of life. It’s a love she picked up while working hard on the family farm in her youth, a love she carried through her various adventures in Marriott-Slaterville, Yakima, Washington, Fresno, California, and back home to Riverdale, Utah. She had a wit as sharp as a spur, and a heart as wide as the open plains. Her hobbies included horses (her favorite was Clipper), being a rodeo flag bearer, music, poetry, creator of book titles, floral design, and playing the piano and organ. Joan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Above all, Joan was a loving mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her children Clark (Julie) Skeen, Tracy (Diane) Skeen, James (Brenda) Skeen and Nancy Rolfe, 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Joan also leaves behind her sisters, Sharon Skeen and Kay (Virg) Howe.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Talmage W. Skeen, parents, Julian and Venis Powell and sister, Lorna Widdison, brother, Tommy Powell, and brothers-in-law, Archie Skeen, Chad Widdison and LaMar Skeen.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, February 16, 2024, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Boulevard, Ogden, Utah, 84404. A celebration of Joan’s life will follow at the mortuary at 11:00 am. Interment at West Warren Cemetery.

Special thanks to the staff at Chancellor Gardens, and Melissa with Symbi Hospice.

Joan taught us that life should be celebrated with laughter, dancing, and love. Joan was quick to remind everyone, including strangers, that we are all loved, and all have incredible value. So, come and share your stories, your laughter, and your love and we invite you to leave your memories on Joan’s memorial page at www.myers-mortuary.com.
