Gary Charles Nate

Feb 16, 2024

Gary Charles Nate, a passionate adventurer, skier, and longtime cameraman for Warren Miller Films, passed away February 15, 2024 at his home in Ogden still in his ski clothes after a final beautiful day of skiing.

Gary was born in Ogden, Utah on June 8, 1937 to Charles Henry Nate and Sarah Bradshaw. After a stellar high school football career at Ogden High School, he went on to play running back for the University of Utah.

After an injury derailed his scholarship funds, Gary worked for the railroad, as a recruiter for Hill Air Force Base, and as a school teacher for a time .. But no matter where he went, he always brought his skis along in case he could break away to the mountains.

“The more I skied, the more I thought ‘How can I ski more? How can I know this freedom?’ And the camera is the thing that really let me pursue it,” he said.

In 1973, while promoting his first ski film, he reached out to Warren Miller with an offer to work as a camera man. Warren hired him and the rest is history. During his 40-year career with Warren Miller Films, Gary beautifully documented the evolution of the ski and snowboard industry. He filmed legends of skiing as well as countless stars of TV and Film, in locations all over the world.

Gary made an impact on anyone who knew him, and his defining characteristic was his generosity, and his love of entertaining anyone who he talked to with the stories of his adventures.

Gary is survived by two sons, Ryan Thomas of Farmington, Utah and Colby Nate of Plano, Texas as well as his beloved grandkids Kyra, Charly, Michael, Preston, and Bobby.

A viewing will be held at Leavitt’s Mortuary on Tuesday, February 20th from 6-8PM, and an hour prior to a Funeral Service set for Wednesday February 21st at 11AM. Interment to follow at Leavitt’s Mortuary Mausoleum.
