Arva Lue Petersen Curtis

December 18, 1939 — February 18, 2024

Our loving mother, grandmother, and sister, Arva Lue Petersen Curtis, died on Sunday morning, February 18, 2024, at the age of 84, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arva was born in Logan, Utah to a large family descended from early Mormon pioneers. Her family immigrated to the United States from England, Scotland, and Denmark. She was descended from William Bradford, of the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, as well as William Sprague, who helped found Charlestown and Hingham, Massachusetts.

Arva graduated from Davis High School in Clearfield, Utah and earned an Associate of Fine Arts degree from Merced Community College in Merced, California. She valued higher education and encouraged her children who all graduated from college. She worked for many years as a graphic artist for the Vallejo Times Herald newspaper in Vallejo, California.

Arva married Everett “Curt” Curtis on January 16, 1960. They were stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah and moved many times during the next 20+ years to bases in Arizona, Illinois, California, and Turkey. They were able to buy a home in Tucson, Arizona and then another home in Suisun City, California where they lived from 1979 to 1993. They then happily retired to travel throughout America in their RV, crossing the country twice to visit their son and his family in Boston. They looked for their next home in the southwest and chose to settle in North Las Vegas in 1994. They enjoyed their retirement and continued to travel and explore.

She was a lifelong and faithful LDS church member, serving in many church positions including President of the Relief Society at Incirlik Air Force Base, Turkey. Arva and Curt became sealed for time and all eternity in 1996. They served a two-year mission at the Las Vegas Family History Center and then taught genealogy classes to church members and the public for many years.

Arva was a stunningly beautiful woman who shared her creativity and love of beauty with her children and family. She was a talented artist and sculptor and could turn her hand at anything, including sewing, building, upholstering furniture, and decorating her homes. Her art is treasured by her children and extended family.

Arva is survived by her three children; daughters, Sandra Kaye Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada and Lisa Arlene Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada; son, Richard (Lisa McKenna) Roy Curtis; grandchildren, Siya Curtis and John Curtis of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Arva was the eldest of nine children and is also survived by brothers, Harold Petersen, Christian (Hilkka) Alexander Petersen, and Kevin Petersen; sister, Debra Moody; as well as many nieces and nephews. Arva was predeceased by her husband, Everett Martin Curtis; parents, Lily Delila Izatt and Arvid Jensen Petersen; sisters, Geraldine Wurth and Maren Petersen; brothers, Randy Petersen and Lynn Petersen; and son-in-law, Terence Michael Hughes.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Logan City Cemetery, 1000 North 1200 East, Logan, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Aaron’s Mortuary, 496 24th Street, Ogden, Utah.

They will lie near the river where they dated and fell in love.
