MERLIN RICHENS

Merlin Richens, age 87, passed away peacefully in Kaysville, on January 12, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was a beloved father, husband and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Merlin was born on March 5, 1936 in Vernal, Utah as the youngest son of Vern and Melvina Thompson Richens. He lived in Vernal most of his life where he spent his formative years. He was an outstanding athlete where he played basketball, football and excelled in track and baseball.

After graduating from Uintah High School he worked at the Gilsonite Mine in Bonanza, Utah where he was involved in a deadly mine accident that left him unable to work in physically demanding jobs. As a result, he went on to attend Utah Barber College and later became a community icon as the town’s barber in both Vernal and Roosevelt, Utah.

Merlin was an avid golfer winning many honors and awards in tournaments throughout the region for his outstanding play. He was a fierce competitor and played city league and church softball, basketball, and tennis.

He loved hunting, fishing, camping and he trapped with his brother and sons to help supplement the family income.

Throughout his life, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for his family. He was a devoted father, husband, brother, and grandfather. Merlin loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Later in life, he enjoyed spending time in his garden growing exceptional tomatoes and giving them away to family, friends, and neighbors.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in various church positions throughout his life.

Merlin married Kaye Protzman on April 11, 1958. They were later divorced. He married Rhea Sullivan Conrad on August 22, 1985 and created an even bigger family over 38 years of marriage.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rhea and his children, Greg Richens, Jeff Richens, Ken (Darlene) Richens, Brad Richens, David (Cindy) Richens, Suzy (Barry) Heugly, and his stepchildren Debbie Conrad Gagon, Terri Conrad Hanson, Richard Arden Conrad, and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January, 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the Roosevelt West Stake Center (150 South Skyline Drive). Viewings will be held on Friday evening at the Hullinger Mortuary (457 E 300 N) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 11:30 – 12:45 .

Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
