Katie Carol Montgomery

Jan 16, 2024

May 19, 1997 – January 7, 2024

On January 7, 2024 we lost our dear sibling, child, mother, aunt, coach, and friend Katie Carol Montgomery at 26 years old. Katie was traveling home from a trip to Montana with friends, when the vehicle they were in was caught in a multi-car pileup, Katie was the lone fatality.

Katie was born in Ogden, Utah to Gordon and Tammy Montgomery on May 19, 1997. Katie was the definition of great things come in small packages. Affectionately called Katie-bug, they were a tiny little thing that had such a big personality. Katie was extremely intelligent and talented, they excelled at almost everything they tried to do. They spent their childhood dancing, cooking, baking, reading, writing, sewing, and crafting. Katie loved the outdoors and could often be found in a tree or riding their bike.

In March of 2016 Katie became a single mother to Rosie. Katie rose to the position of mother and did their best to build a village to surround Rosie with people who could love her as much as they did. Rosie was always by their side trying to be just like mommy. You could often find them together out hiking, camping, going to parades and fairs. Rosie was a Girl Scout and Katie was always busy helping the troop with various things throughout the year, especially cookie sales. Katie and Rosie shared a great love for animals, especially cats.

In recent years Katie found a love of roller derby. Skating under the number 74 and name Critical Hits or “Crit” they were an important part of the team. Katie was tasked with coaching new recruits and was very good at torturing them into shape. Their teaching skills were amazing and was able to teach anyone. Katie always made everyone feel welcomed no matter their skill level. Rosie of course was always at the derby learning to skate and trying to be like mom.

Katie stood up for what they believed in and wouldn’t compromise their morals for anyone. They fought for human rights and staunchly protested the mistreatment of anyone. In the last few years of their life, Katie came out as non-binary and queer with the fierce acceptance and support from their friends and family.

Katie is survived by parents Gordon and Tammy, brother J.J. (Andrea), sisters Karen (Adam) and Kimberly, daughter Rosie, roommates Jordyn and Jack, many nieces, nephews, friends and teammates. This loss was sudden and tragic, there is a big Katie shaped hole in a very large community.
