John Russell

Mar 8, 2024

Having lived a long, full life John (Jerry) Russell passed away at his home in Island Park, Idaho on February 29, 2024. Jerry was born January 25, 1930, in Roy, Utah. He was the first of three children from the union of Raymond and Minnie Russell (Pippen). He grew up in Roy, attended public schools and graduated from Weber High School in 1948.

In 1951, Jerry married Sharon Hunt (later divorced). They had five children and Jerry was very involved in their upbringing. He instilled in them early and often a strong work ethic and the value of the dollar. He attended their countless sport and other activities–many times as a coach but also as a supportive, loving parent. He counseled them through the many challenges of growing up–a good listener and comforter. He created fun opportunities for his family to share together, even when resources were tight. He found a way to buy that first old boat and the old truck with a camper. Many fun, memorable times were had by all.

Jerry was an accomplished golfer (playing well into his eighties) and instilled the love of the game in all his children. He had a curious mind, read about current events, and never shied away from discussing issues with all willing. He made friends easily and had the gift of gab. He would strike up a conversation with anyone and more times than not make a new friend.

In 1979, Jerry married Gin Long. He retired from Hill AFB where he held numerous management positions within the Maintenance Directorate. At the pinnacle of his career, he was Chief of the Administrative Division where he received the Civilian Meritorious Achievement Award for his work in improving race relations and helping create a more harmonious, productive workforce. Together with her two children, they moved to England where she took a new DOD assignment. There they had a son, John Rad. They traveled through parts of Europe and upon return to the USA settled in Riverdale, Utah. For many years they hosted foreign exchange students from Europe. He became very close to many of them and their families–sharing many two-way visits across the pond.

Twenty years ago, they decided to move to Island Park–a place where Jerry quickly made many friends. He soon enmeshed himself in the operation of the community, playing a role in water management among other duties. He became an avid photographer of nature and a regular contributor to the Island Park News. For several years he wrote short columns about current events and other hot button issues–often kindling community conversations.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dixie Russell, brother Joe Russell, first wife Sharon Hendry, children Rand Russell (Janice) and Lana Wilcox (Dean); and grandchild Taylor Wilcox.

He is survived by his wife Gin; sons Chad (Susan), Brad (Vikki), and John Rad; daughter Gaylene Block (Dan); stepson Scott and stepdaughter Cathy (Troy); numerous grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren.

On Saturday, June 29th, Jerry’s life will be celebrated downstairs at the Union Grill from 12 noon to 2:00 pm.
