Laurence “Larry” Moyes

Mar 11, 2024

1944 — 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved dad Dr. Laurence Kent Moyes, born on September 15, 1944, in Ogden, Utah, to Thelma Anafred Banford and Hugh Jesse Moyes. Known for his dedication and loyalty, Laurence, affectionately known as Larry, left a profound imprint on the hearts of those he encountered in his journey through life. He was a remarkable man who possessed an uncanny ability to remember the smallest details about people, a trait that made him not just a reliable friend and family member, but also an unforgettable dentist.

Larry was sealed to Sandra Ruth Bailey on August 4th, 1967, in the Logan temple. They enjoyed bowling, swimming, and teaching a youth Sunday School class together and worked as a team to support him receiving his DDS degree from UCLA. He served for 2 years in the Public Health Service in Seattle, Washington, before returning to Ogden to join his father’s dental practice. Larry enjoyed playing basketball and had a mean layup shot. He was the youngest in his family and he and Sandy and the family enjoyed gathering with his nieces and nephews, who were his age, and their parents at big holiday gatherings such as Christmas breakfast, Thanksgiving, and Easter.

Larry was a man with a great love for motor vehicles of all types. From a young age, he could name the make and model of any car he saw, a testament to his smart and curious nature. This love extended to his adult years, culminating in a vast collection of cars, trucks, and Army Jeeps. His sons, Jon and Jeff, fondly remember Wednesday afternoons spent working on cars together at “the Farm.” He was known for his ability to fix almost anything, and he passed his skills on to his sons. The Farm was a place that brought immense joy to Larry and the whole family. Many afternoons were spent roasting hot dogs and exploring the property. The grand dogs were always welcome to visit, and they could sense his kindness as he took time to rub their heads and bellies.

Beyond his car collection, Larry was a dedicated dentist who served at Millcreek, a youth corrections facility in Ogden for many years in addition to maintaining a full-time practice of his own. He and Sandy worked together in the office and retired 6 years ago together. It was the privilege of his daughters, Jen and Julie, to work with him at the office while teenagers. They could see his compassion and professionalism up close and enjoyed the time spent with him. His genuine care for his patients was returned with loyalty and respect, allowing him to treat generations of their families.

Larry is a dedicated and life-long faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His dedication led him to serve a mission to Scotland and he held many callings over the years. He was also deeply involved in the Scouting program with his wife, Sandy.

Sandy and Larry enjoyed spending time with their children and made sure mealtimes were spent together. Family vacations were an annual tradition and our dad faithfully drove us in the blue cruiser to many unique and off-the-beaten-path locations that our adventurous mom planned. They carried on this tradition with their kids and grandchildren as everyone grew up. They enjoyed spending time in Lava Hot Springs in Idaho at The Tiny House where he took care of the yard and they both enjoyed resting. He enjoyed going to Smith and Edwards and we all had opportunity to find treasures there as he looked around the yard and visited with the owners.

Larry is survived by his children, Julie (Layne) Blanch, Jennifer (Daniel) Calder, Jeffrey (Brenda) Moyes, and Jonathan (Tenille) Moyes. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Anafred Moyes, his wife, Sandra Moyes, his daughter, Jill Moyes and his sisters, Carol (Bill) Keesler and Elaine (Lester) Fronk, and brother Jay (Ann) Moyes. He is also preceded by his in-laws (Iris and Joseph Bailey) and 2 brothers-in-law (Keith and Alan.) He is survived by a talented group of grandchildren of whom he is so proud and sees the fine people they are becoming: Mason, Koban, Lauren, Jake, Jackson, Logan (Heather), Ashley, Emily (Michael) and Adam (Rachel). Larry was a man who believed that people mattered most. His children, wife, and many long-time friends will forever remember him as a loyal, dedicated, reliable, and smart individual who left an indelible mark on their lives.

The family wishes to express appreciation to Applegate Homecare and Hospice for their tender, responsive, and comforting care of both Larry and Sandy over the past few months. We also thank Dr. Van Christiansen and his staff for caring for them for many years.
