Ellen Stokes Sheppard
February 27, 1928 — March 10, 2024
Ellen Stokes Sheppard was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 27, 1928. She was the ninth child of Archibald LeGrand and Mary Lupton Heward Stokes. She passed from this life on March 10, 2024, at the age of 96 at Legacy House Assisted Living in Ogden, where she had resided for the last 14 months. She had five sisters and two brothers, Winona, Maurine, Geraldine, Ruth, Thomas, John, Arnold, and Annie.
She lived in Salt Lake on 45th South with her family and enjoyed playing baseball as a young girl. She enjoyed watching professional baseball all of her life. She also enjoyed ice skating on a pond near her home, usually with her brother Tom. She graduated from Granite High School and had many friends and admirers.
Ellen married Robert “Bob” W. Sheppard on November 12, 1948, in Salt Lake. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two children, a daughter Maryellen, and a son Robert Rand. They had four grandchildren, Cameron, Travis, Maylinda, and Kari. She has eleven great-grandchildren.
Ellen’s greatest joy in life was her family. Her first job was tending children for her older sisters. She continued to be the one we all turned to for help with children. Babies and toddlers were a great joy to her.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her whole life. Faithfully serving in many callings. She and Bob served two missions one in Ogden another in Norway. She loved serving and loved to talk to others about their missions. She and Bob also had a calling serving at Harrison Regent. Her quiet faithful ways defined her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She wasn’t interested in being the center of attention or in charge but was always willing to do what had been asked of her. Ellen and Bob served in the Ogden Temple for many years.
Ellen and Bob had many opportunities to travel with family and friends. She was a longtime member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Camp Honeycomb. She knew of her ancestors and Bob’s ancestors and wished to carry on their legacy.
Ellen is survived by her children, Maryellen (Craig) Campbell and R. Rand (Elsa); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; granddaughter, Maylinda; her parents; her siblings and their spouses; Bob’s siblings and their spouses; some of her nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Burch Creek 4th Ward Chapel, 4955 Adams Avenue, South Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
The family wishes to thank all of the staff and caregivers at Legacy House of Ogden for their kind care and love during her residency there. We also wish to thank Inspiration Hospice for care in the final week of her life, especially nurses Dee and Alisha.
